Huh? The second comment was my encapsulation of your little explanation of induction. You were saying that you were able to come to the conclusion that poetry sucks (to you) because your experiences reading it have, so far, been sucky. And this contradicts your first comment that it is in your nature not to enjoy poetry.

A nature is something that is final, that doesn't change.
A conclusion reached by induction (especially a weak, intuitive one based on experience) is not final, is changeable.

To say that you dislike poetry because it is in your nature is to say that you will never, under any circumstances, enjoy poetry.
To say that you dislike poetry because your experience has demonstrated this tendency is to say that you are open to the possibility that you might, under different circumstances, enjoy poetry.

You can't say both at once.

I like visual art (EXCEPT for that modern art nonsense - I'm talking about art that doesn't look like someone threw up on an easel), and I love music of all sorts.

But reading sentimental stanza-ed trash about how old yellowed linens smell like Grandma?

NEIN danke. That WILL make me create "modern art" aka blowing chunks on the paper the poem is written on.

    Aren't I classy?
    Well bully for you.

I'm just saying that you have an irrational prejudice against poetry in general that is causing you to close your mind to the possibility of ever enjoying any. Why do that? What is gained by such a mentality?

Also, I'm not aiming this just at you. It's a fair question to anyone in this thread who has stated - straight-up - that they dislike poetry.

Also, I'm surprised how many people say that they can't "understand" poetry. What does this mean, exactly? That you can't understand the words? The meaning? The purpose? Because understanding the words and the purpose seem like fairly simple tasks. Of course, meaning can be trickier, but the indeterminacy of the text pretty much guarantees that any interpretation is right - so it can't be that difficult. I don't understand what you don't understand.

It is. The line "Realize just how nerdy" has six syllables. That's why I pointed it out. Although, I guess I could be wrong to count "realize" as having two instead of three syllables. Ree-lize v.s. Ree-uh-lize.
