Well it's not really straight compliments like 'you're funny, or you're pretty, or you're smart' that I value the most. I appreciate it if there is more to it, otherwise I'm liable to dismiss it. But saying that, my INTP does compliments so rarely they all sound genuine.

From other people, compliments make me very uncomfortable. I begin wishing for the ground to open and swallow me, anything to get out of the hell of having to react and respond. (My dad constantly chides me about the necessity of receiving compliments gracefully instead making some deprecating remark. argh. thank you daddy, can I die now?)

But back to my INTP :) Here are some examples I have enjoyed:

"You make me not want to talk to anyone else"
"I love it when you wear that dress"
"I love talking to you"
"What do you think about X?"
"When I read your book... it's amazing. I don't know how you do it"
"You feel right"
"Would you look at this and give me your opinion?" (about something he's working on)
"You have such a natural beauty"
"Sometimes you care too much" (not in a harsh way)

I have learned to see the compliment in the way he treats me. The intellectual respect, consideration, selflessness, unveiling of his mind and curiosity of mine, willingness to let me see his emotions, playfulness... it's completely different than I've seen him treat anyone else. In this, I receive unvoiced compliments every day. :)

I was just curious what other INTPs would say/thought about the subject. I would like more, but at the same time I'm fine.

When I ask my isfp for help on math equations, she tends to say "get lost and see that the garbage is been taken out" :/

I want an intp mate !

Math. Shudder.
Anytime I come across one of those nasty number things, I throw the concoction at my INTP in panic and hide under the bed. Then he presents me with a pretty little solution. Sometimes he even wraps it in a bow.

INTP questions:

How does one know you are angry if only an coworker?

Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?

How do you like to be directed/managed? How would you prefer to learn or be taught?

do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?

what is your political philosophy?

What were you like as a little baby/little kid?

Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?

How comfortable are you talking about your personal relationships at work and are there boundaries?

INTP questions:

We'll see.

How does one know you are angry if only an coworker?

You won't.

Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?

Usually. Unless we smell a trap.

How do you like to be directed/managed? How would you prefer to learn or be taught?

Give us the deadline and what you want, then LEAVE US ALONE. Do not micromanage. INTPs prefer to learn.

do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?

Yes. Yes. No. Probably allergic.

what is your political philosophy?

I oppose stupidity.

What were you like as a little baby/little kid?

Quiet.

Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?

Other INTPs do. Maybe. No.

How comfortable are you talking about your personal relationships at work and are there boundaries?

I only talk about such things with friends.

I like 5. Do you have a favorite number?
Nope.

You probably won't be able to tell.
Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?
Yes.
How do you like to be directed/managed?
Just tell me exactly what you expect me to do and try not to micro manage.
do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?
Yes. No. Yes. No.
what is your political philosophy?
Political philosophy is a subject, not an ''option''. :sage:
What were you like as a little baby/little kid?
I went through a lot of phases. From trouble maker to top student. I used to love climbing trees.
Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?
No.No.No.

Am I being completely annoying if I try answering about my INTP? Yes? Sorry :D

INTP questions:

How does one know you are angry if only an coworker?
They don't know. Ever. Course, he works from home and communicates with them over the internet. I hear a lot of swearing about idiots though. Sometimes he asks me to read over an email to make sure it's not even inadvertently showing how pissed off he is.
Someone constantly asking for help without trying to figure it out on their own is a sure way to make him angry.

Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?
Probably.
It would depend to a degree on the person who requested this. If he has seen previous behavior that he considered irrational or excessively emotional, he might not believe them. So if he thinks the person won't be able to take it calmly... well he's probably going to be avoiding you anyway.

(Sometimes I can tell he is upset about something, this aura of withdrawn unresponsiveness, when I ask what's wrong he says, 'nothing.' fffffuuuuuuuuuccccccckkkkkkkk. Ok it annoys me. I tried to tell him that it makes me question my perceptions. Is he upset? Am I reading him wrong? If he would just say 'yes, but I don't want to talk about it', it would be so much easier.
He finally told me that he says 'nothing' because he isn't sure if how he's feeling is rational. I was )

How do you like to be directed/managed? How would you prefer to learn or be taught?
Don't direct him, don't manage him. Tell him the objective, discuss requirements, brainstorm with him. Let him get on with it.
(He also dislikes managing others)

He doesn't like being taught, but enjoys learning things on his own. He's a programmer so he's constantly expanding and refining those skills. Also he's pretty into forex and economics. Those systems seems to provide him with endless scope for analysis...
Sometimes it seems like learning/understanding complex systems isn't even a choice. His brain just latches onto them and obsessively works until everything unfolds to clarity. Once that's achieved, he drops it.

I think this is why he likes computer games, a system to figure out. But they're normally too simplistic to keep his attention for long. Once their system is sorted he's bored and never touches it again.
(At the moment Europa Universalis has him engaged)

do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?

He likes ketchup and tomato sauce. Although he had never tasted ketchup until I forced it on him. I'm pretty sure as a child he lived on tomato sauce... He likes pickles, again I introduced him, they only seem to have sweet ones here in NZ.

He's not too keen on bunnies. I think he doesn't see the point. I used to have a little fluffy black one. He held it once. It was very cute.

Bunny hair? I think he likes it lining his slippers.

what is your political philosophy?
Oh god. I am not getting started on politics.

I think MacGuffin summed it up perfectly
I oppose stupidity.

What were you like as a little baby/little kid?
He was a quiet, self contained, well behaved little boy, with a whole host of imaginary friends and an obsession with the system of cricket. His mother raves about how good he was. Then he became a teenager. She shakes her head 'I don't know what happened!'

Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?

He may or may not like cocaine, but he'd probably never try it to find out. Way WAY to careful about his body. (He does enjoy weed in moderation, only from a vape. Smoke is Bad.)

I doubt the subject of buttercups has ever entered his head, let alone ascribing an opinion to it.

And no.

How comfortable are you talking about your personal relationships at work and are there boundaries?
There is nothing but boundaries. He never gets even remotely personal with work. And he hates it when they start telling him personal things. And he hates it even more if they talk about their relationships.

I like 5. Do you have a favorite number?

I think he would find it ridiculous.

INTPs and giving compliments?
In my experience they're rare as a purple spotted hyena... of course this means when one of the elusive beasts is spotted, it's extra special.

Is it that you think your view is apparent so you don't want to say it? You don't even consciously think about it? It's awkward?

Last night I received one of these inimitable gems, something I had no idea he thought. I want more!

Compliments are weird, both on the giving and the receiving end. I want them in areas where I feel insecure and don't really care that much in areas I know I'm doing fine. So unconsciously I use that same approach with other people. If I don't say anything and obviously seek your companionship you're golden. It usually doesn't occur to me to pay someone a compliment. Unless I know they are insecure about something and just did surprisingly well in that area - then I'd say "hey, that was great just then, see, you can do it". Something has to really stick out and attract my attention for me to positively comment on it.

On the plus side that also means you can be sure that it is an honest compliment and means something.

INTP questions:

How does one know you are angry if only an coworker?

You probably won't know. I might withdraw more than usual, but as a mere aquaintance the difference will be hard to tell.

Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?

Sure.

How do you like to be directed/managed? How would you prefer to learn or be taught?

Give me a precise task description and a source for possible further information. Let me ask questions rather than giving me a full tour with a lot of redundant info (unless we are talking about an academic environment where I strongly prefer direct lectures to group work).

do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?

No, no, some, on my tongue?

what is your political philosophy?

http://www.typologycentral.com/forums/bonfire/50082-ask-tree-hugging-bleeding-heart-atheist-pinko-commie-eurotrash.html

What were you like as a little baby/little kid?

Imagine a little ENTP that only reaches up to your knees

Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?

Nope, nope, nope (and what a waste of perfectly good money!)

How comfortable are you talking about your personal relationships at work and are there boundaries?

I wouldn't talk about them at all. That is reserved for my most intimite circle.

I like 5. Do you have a favorite number?

Not really, but I do have some aesthetic preferences since I'm somewhat synethesic : 3 (yellow) and 5 (red) are good ones

So that's what it is.
With my INTP, the deadpan mode only lasts for the first remark because I've transformed to indignant bristling and he's on the ground dying of laughter. (I do enjoy the sight, so half the bristles are for his benefit ). Then he gets serious and apologizes. Sometimes I catch the glint in his eyes before the next remark. This can go on for hours...

How does one know you are angry if only an coworker?

You won't. Unless you are the co-worker.

Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?

Absolutely. I hate being indirect and greatly dislike it from others.

How do you like to be directed/managed? How would you prefer to learn or be taught?

Tell me what the goal(s) are and when you need it. Then let me work independently on reaching them. I prefer to learn on my own.

do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?

I like ketchup but if it's with fries, I prefer hot sauce. Pickles are always good. I don't like bunnies. Bunny hair feels good. I just wish my dog wouldn't get so excited over it.

what is your political philosophy?

Complicated.

What were you like as a little baby/little kid?

Odd. Lots of magical thinking. Clueless that other people wouldn't be as excited about discussing black holes as I was. Obsessive and always planning crazy stuff.

Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?

No cocaine, got a fluttery heart. I don't like buttercups but I do like butter. *scrapes cocaine off of ketchup and eats it*

How comfortable are you talking about your personal relationships at work and are there boundaries?

I don't discuss personal stuff at work...well, I wouldn't if I had a job.

I like 5. Do you have a favorite number?

Nine.

How does one know you are angry if only an coworker?
It depends... if "only" a coworker, I doubt anyone would believe that I'm angry. Cranky, yes. Angry? I'm not that emotive in general. If "coworker and friend" -- I'll complain.

Can I rely upon you to be direct if I request you to be direct and let you know civility is optional?
Depends. Do I trust you to keep your word that you won't fly off the handle and go guilt-confrontational on me? If so, I'll be direct but polite. If not, I'll be "diplomatic" -- but I probably won't outright lie.

How do you like to be directed/managed? How would you prefer to learn or be taught?
You think I like to be directed/managed? *GRRRR*. Seriously... tell me what you want and then leave me alone. I often don't really have a preference as to how I like to learn. I enjoy reading, listening to interesting speakers, and doing hands-on learning. As long as the topic is interesting.

do you like ketchup? with pickles? and bunnies? bunny hair?
I find ketchup absolutely repulsive, and won't even think of eating anything that it shares a plate with. Pickles = okay. Bunnies = cute but painfully stupid as pets. Bunny hair... I guess it keeps them warm, as they're probably too stupid to seek warmth themselves.

what is your political philosophy?
On the U.S. spectrum, leftish. Scandinavian democratic socialist is a pretty good impression of my thoughts on large-scale political structure.

What were you like as a little baby/little kid?
Pretty shy and very sensitive. I did not like criticism at all, and expected myself to excel at everything. I always liked speculative stories - science fiction, etc.

Do you like cocaine? buttercups? ketchsup on your cocaine?
I'm very much against recreational drug use, so absolutely not on the cocaine. If you put ketchup on it (I think you might have hit on the one thing improved by a dousing with vile ketchup!), I might laugh, but I'd leave the house/party/etc. anyway.

How comfortable are you talking about your personal relationships at work and are there boundaries?
I don't have any personal relationships for which boundaries are really relevant. I don't mind mentioning friends, etc. at work, but honestly I only talk to a small handful of people at work.

I like 5. Do you have a favorite number?
I like pi. Apple, particularly. But strawberry-rhubarb is pretty good too.

Dear INTPs,

Why don't you like me?

I am so awesome and I bake such yummah cookies.
Cookies!!! Yum!!!

Sorry, distracted me there. I don't know that INTP's may not like you, Saturned, but you seem to have had some bad experiences with us, and perhaps you're on your guard more than you want to be when you see INTP-ish behavior?

It's also pretty common for people to think that INTP's don't like them, when that's not the case. Your typical INTP doesn't really exhibit a lot of social signals to reaffirm, etc. -- especially in the early stages of getting to know someone. Often this gets interpreted as disinterest or dislike, when either a) exactly the opposite or b) "still gathering information and hasn't formed an opinion one way or the other yet" is really the case.

I could count on one hand (ok yes that's the only way I know how) the amount of people who on first meeting thought my INTP liked them. I sometimes go around in a hazmat suit doing damage control. It's a fun game.
There is also (though I'm sure it's not applicable to Saturned :)) a c) your interpretation of disinterest is exactly right. (Seems more likely than actual dislike. At least, while my INTP would rarely say he dislikes someone, he disinterests all over the place.)
