    Default INTP's sleeping needs...

Okay, my dear INTP boyfriend needs his sleep. If he doesn't, he gets in a most desperate state.

I'm blaming his desperate need for sleep on his constant thinking abilities. His extreme thinking zaps the energy right out of him.

My youngest son (20), also a dear INTP, can sleep 12+ hours if I let him. I can blame it on his being on a computer 12+ hours a day, though (playing online strategy games).

Thankfully, I do like to sleep, but I don't need it... not like they do.

Any other INTPs out there that experiences this to this extreme?

I like to get about 8 hours a night, but usually survive on 6 or 7.

When my mind is particuarly active or when I am working on a project that I am really excited about I find that I need much less sleep. When it's finally over I will need a few nights of good solid sleep to recharge sufficiently.

Hey is this an INTP thing? Both my INTP friends do like their naps -- but one has been diagnosed with a straight up sleeping disorder (almost narcoleptic, sometimes she'll fall asleep and it is extremely difficult to wake her up). And the other has pretty bad insomnia.

I think it might be an IN_P thing, possibly even an I__P thing. I've heard of INFP's needing similar amounts of sleep. On the other hand, this could be type independent, and we're seeing connections where none exist.

After coffee, I go to sleep after midnight.
Usually I have a REM sleep of sixteen minutes.
The bed clothes and the pillows are on the floor.
    I remake the bed.
    I remake the coffee.
I read five pages of one of my favourite books.
    I slumber.
    I sleep 46 minutes.
    Alpha Beta Gamma?
    My shrink says Beta.
What does he know about sleep?

    I remake some coffee.
I go to the terrace to spot stars. If it is cloudy I go back to bed.
I have another REM for another sixteen minutes.
If I am lucky I shift to Alpha.. Beta.. Gamma.. not in this order as the Austrian idiot claims though.
If I am not lucky I go out to haunt the environment.

It does not always depend on the moon.. there may be some other factors involved.

I'm sort of inclined to think it's a combination of thinking and introversion. When I was in my 'teens I needed 10 hours or so in order to simply not feel like a zombie all day. To this day 8 is my minimum, 9 my preference.

(Obviously this is just a thought of mine with no scientific basis whatsoever, so get those grains of salt out.)

Edit: I don't mean thinking in the Jungian/MBTI sense. The INFPs I've known have been very deep thinkers.

I typically run on about 3 hours or less. After particularly stressful events or illness, I might up that number to 5 hours, but usually only for a night or two. I tend to doze in little bursts, rather than sleep for uninterrupted intervals.

For the last two years, I sleep about 5-6 hours a night max. On occasion, I have only had 4.

This is partly not my choice -- I have just had emotional anxiety and have trouble committing to sleep -- and I would like to sleep more if I could.

It has definitely had an impact on my thinking ability, but I also can maintain a level of functionality that I don't see in others who go so long without sleep. Most of them seem to be able to go without much sleep for a few days, and then their bodies shut down and they have to sleep and make up the time.

To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty.” ~ H.P. Lovecraft
