Is this cafe de la Regence?

It was called le cafe de la Place du Palais-Royal before the Revolution.

I do not see Marx there, or even Engels. There they met.
Wrong Century!
Well, they had met before, but they did not greatly impress each other on the first account. It always happens between great men.

Le cafe de la Regence is another story. A relaxed atmosphere.
Duc de Richelieu, Diderot, Rousseau, Bonaparte, Ben Franklin and Herr Grimm used to go there.
A great chess place. They had some of those in the Old Russia.
The Putsch of Lenin wiped the cafes out.
In St. Petersburg, in Moscow, and even in Odessa.
Irony of history. :)

The cafe meeting lead to the outlawing of the cafes.

I am out.
Forty percent of the windows are black.
Some people are already sleeping.
Some have not yet arrived.
It is late. But not yet midnight.
I open my computor.
It is 23.40

Paiva meni mailleen.
What does it mean?

Sun has set.
A very old saying.
From the time when Aurinko did not yet light the day.

How old can a saying be?
As old as a language has a continuity.

People came and brought Aurinko with them.
When?
When people used to say, after sunset:

Paiva meni mailleen.

Where did the new people come from?
East? Three hundred years ago they had Paiva in the East.
Before the Romanovs invented Siberia.
South? They have Paiva in the South.
It has to be Sweden.

South Sweden and Denmark.
They changed language.

When?
It has to be when Saule with his chariot entered Lithuania.
A chariot without wheels.
Saule crossed the Baltic in the winter.

I have no idea where this came from or is going, but wouldn't it be "day has gone" - if aurinko is the sun and paiva is day?

But I'm not a native speaker - just recognized the language.

An interesting observation.
Yes. I think you are right.. in a way.
Here semantics has a double suit.

Paiva is sun and day.
After the Finns had adopted Aurinko Paiva came to mean only day?
Not exactly.

Paiva meni mailleen.

Menna maata = go to sleep.
maa = earth, land, country; here we have the plural.

There is an implicit meaning.
Sun is vanished in our sight: it is still there, beyond, illuminating other lands.

I think Aurinko and Taivas (< Teivas) might have come together.
Teivas is the Sky God: Zeus.

There is Sol (< Saule) and Himmel. The newcomers.
Aurinko and Teivas are of the older Indo-European stratum.

Where did you learn Finnish?

I read a post in the Cannels > Relationships subforum.
WHAT'S UP, DOC?

What's up with ISFJs keeping their feelings hidden?
I tell what's up.

Torppa means a hut. It is the same word as the German Dorf. Dorf is a village.

Torppa is a family name in Finland. It is not a name of the landowning families.
The landowners do not live in huts.

Torppa was my tutor in religion. He had just arrived from Canada, where he had worked as a priest.
He was a man of a violent temper. His girlfriend was not a natural blondine.
The hero of Father Torppa was a terrorist called Eugen Schauman.

This is odd.
I do not get it.
As I have already pointed out, Torppa was a poor chap.
Eugen was rich. He was one of the founders of the White Guards, who protected the interests of the landowners.

Eugen shot Bobrikov.
The Governor-General of the Grand Duchy. The friend of the poor. So they say.

What it is with the rich and the poor?
The poor do not steal. Or if they do, they are not clever in the game.

I marvel at Buck Henry.
What a chap.
He co-authored the script of the Graduate.
The Graduate made Paul Simon and Dustin Hoffman famous.
And it made the Bucky Boy rich.

Charlie Webb wrote the Graduate.
He lives in poverty.

One day I saw.
I saw the Graduate in the book shop.
The novel of Charlie.

I had seen the movie.
You know. The one in which Buck Henry makes a cameo appearance.
As a room clerk. In the Taft Hotel, five miles west of Pasadena, CA.

I have never seen such a performance. Buck is good.
He can take his audience. Therefore he is an insider in the film industry.
Buck is an actor.
But he is not a writer.
He nearly got an Oscar for his script for the Graduate.

Where I was? Oh yes.
I am in this bookshop. I see a new novel. It is the Graduate.
I start reading the novel.

But I have read it before!
How it is possible?
I have not read the book.
No, Sir.

I had seen the film. ;)

The earthy philosopher Bobby Dylan. The early riser. A soul in bliss.
The idol of the baby boomers.

I originally thought he came from Tennessee.
I do not know where I got the wrong impression.
Or maybe I do.

In my imagination Tennessee was the epitome of the rural America.
Or folk music.
There was something folkish and rural about Bob. It is only therefore he touched people's hearts.

Even my grandmother heard him on the radio.
She was a practical woman.
ISFJ. Like all the good grandmothers of old.

I do not know why I want to tell this little adventure.
It is about a thing that one day took place in a uni cafe. A humiliating thing if you ask me.
It does not matter. Nobody reads blogs.

She was not born in a torppa.
A torppa was a castle to her.

At fifteen, she was a servant girl in a garden house.
A garden house is gaard in Danish.
The original word is Indo European kart.
It means a house with an orchade. The same word as the English garden and the French jardin and the Swedish jord and again the English earth.

Apropos earth is a garden. The original abode of the of noblesse.
They used to have apples in the orchade. And later they had potatoes.
Potatoes are the apples of the earth.
The Germans call them kartoffel.
Offel is dialect. It stands for apfel. All the words have a dialect origin.
Apfel is apple. Kart + apfel. Kartoffel. Apple of the earth. So it is in French.
Forgive my French.
Kartoffel. The etymology of the word in Wikipedia is wrong. Amateur confusion.

If we were ignorant in recent history, we should think it is a very old word.
As it happens it is very recent.
What is the lesson here? The lesson is history is not a dusty book.
History is taking place now.
And the history of the past?
What past?

What I am trying to say?
I am talking about the class thing. And its origin in the now.
Noblesse is not an urban thing.
The roots are in the soil.

And what has all this to do with my grandmother?
Very much. And it has to do with the ISFJs keeping their feelings hidden.

There were four rural classes in the country.
At the top were those who were born in the garden house.
Then came the big landowners.
Then came the torppa dwellers.
At the bottom were the cottage dwellers.
My grandmother was born in the cottage.

Originally the Europeans lived in caves.
They collected peat for fuel.

Wet peat is of no use.
How to keep it dry?
The Europeans invented the roof.

Ice was receding.
A change of climate.
The hunter follows the prey.

The Europeans invented the dwelling.
A thing outside of the cave.

There is an old Finnish family name.
Turpeinen.
Turpe + -nen.

- nen is the equivalent of the Scandinavian Ing.

Ing-Mar. The famous Ing.
Ing-Rid. The riding Ing.

Peat was a god.

Ingmar Bergman.
Ingrid Bergman.

The early hut was erected upon a mountain.
A place of shelter.

I read some newspaper articles written by big time industrialists, with my morning coffee.

If you have read one, you have read them all.
It is natural to defend yourself it you are under attack.

I do not know how much they make a year on average.
Maybe five million euro after taxes. Maybe more.

Why they make so much?
They all say it is because they have earned it.
How come they have earned so much?
They say it is because they are exceptionally clever.

If they are exceptionally clever, why do they resemble each other like water drops?
What do they do in their free time?
Do they read books?
Never.
They hunt with chums.

I read the stories of their childhood.
There they grew up behind the high fences.
Why the fences?
In their exclusive schools they met the sons of the other industrialists.
A network grew up early on.
A network of money, influence and power.
It has little to do with exceptional cleverness.

Actually, they are dumbasses.
They ruin the companies they lead.
How?
They squeese them.
Like lemons.

I read in the paper that the macho men do not turn their head.
It is not macho to turn your head.

The macho men have to turn their body to turn their heads.
The article added that it is not manly to know foreign languages.

Poor me! I confess I turn my head. I even know a few foreign languages.
What unforeseen twist of fate made me end so low?

A few years ago I was in the train.
Suddenly the train stopped. There was a fire outside.

Nobody turned his head to see the fire.
Apart from me.

Now I know what.
They were all macho men.
But some of them were women.

Miracles never end.

Indeed wildcat - the macho man does not turn, but looks only forward.

I had a similar experience on a train from Schleswig-Holstein into Denmark. I had went to Flensburg to visit a German friend - he later went on to study in Munich and has done very well for himself. I took the opportunity to travel up into Jutland to meet up with my then girlfriend, who was training in a large provincial town too boring to name. And trains are a good way to travel in Europe. So I thought I'd relax and enjoy the European Dream, in the making, so to speak.

The train approached the Danish border crossing point and stopped; dozens of police boarded - some with dogs stood outside. The dogs were quite, they were under orders.

A middle-eastern woman was hauled off the train with her children - her papers were not in order, obviously.

Of course nobody on the train - largely a mixture of Danes and Germans - turned. I noticed this only after looking at the woman. The woman and her children were screaming, their distress obvious to anyone with ears. It may as well not have been happening, for all my fellow travellers appeared to care - even the women never turned.

Only the children on board were curious, but children learn how to behave from their parents; and like the dogs - they were under orders!

Some things never change.

A sad spectacle.

When I entered the University of Helsinki, a lecture was held for the new students.
The speaker was a middle aged woman. Her hair was tied in an austere knot.
She said:

Never question or ask. Never doubt what you learn here.
Your professors are in the know. You know nothing.
You are not allowed to argue. You are here to absorb what you we teach you.

Later, I discovered the history of the discovery of the DNA.
It could have only taken place in a British university.

What is wrong with us continentals?
Everything.

Yes, wildcat. Serendipidy is a wonderful thing, but only if you see it as a friend.

Your sour-faced "teacher" hadn't realised that her paradigm didn't work. Her problem was not that it didn't work, but that she couldn't see that it didn't work.

Happy is the man that shouts - I am wrong.

Take care.
