Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

NFs, you dont have strong opinions concerning ideas this poem invoked in regards to how a life is best lived?

Jeez, BW, you're slipping. Punctuation errors and incomprehensible sentence construction?

Are you ok? :hug:

I understood it.

(But maybe that's not a good thing for me. :) )

It's nice and all, but there isn't really anything about passion or causes that I could see and what is an NF without passion and causes?

Oooh--good point?

Are discontented SJs the intended audience?

Yes, it felt a lot like pseudo-NF... SJ sentimentalism and call-to-duty style thinking (sort of like the poetry we see on "inspirational" cards and such) masquerading as NF.

There was no spark or underlying life to it that would signify it to be authentic NF, everything was very surface-oriented.

Maybe we should rewrite it? :nice:

Sounds like a game to me.... :smoke:

Sounds like fun. I'm getting ready to leave for a few hours, but I might print it up to take with me so I can follow the parallels and see where you are when I get back.

That sounds like a plan...:D Better yet, if we feel VERY bored, perhaps we can write it for each of the four Keirsey archetypes.

Are you going to your renaissance group today? Have fun!

Sounds like a depressed INFP who hasn't quite gotten misanthropic yet; if I ever saw an NF write like that I'd feel really bad for the person. It's almost like "I give up", something I've been so close to more often than I'd like...

Hmmm yeah didn't inspire me...didn't feel very NF like at all. I think someone said above like a call to duty. Caring for and about people is not a duty for me...it just is. I'd like to see the rewrites...if I wasn't so exhausted after this weekend I'd add my ideas...might do it anyway if I wake up from a long nap before heading back out AGAIN....

That poem reminds me of Fitter, Happier, More Productive by Radiohead. More like a to do list of how one should act than anything else.

Fitter, happier, more productive, comfortable, not drinking too much
Regular exercise at the gym, 3 days a week
Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries at ease
Eating well, no more microwave dinners and saturated fats
A patient better driver, a safer car, baby smiling in back seat
Sleeping well, no bad dreams, no paranoia
Careful to all animals, never washing spiders down the plughole
Keep in contact with old friends, enjoy a drink now and then
Will frequently check credit at moral bank, hole in wall
Favors for favors, fond but not in love
Charity standing orders on sundays ring road supermarket
No killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants
Car wash, also on sundays, no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
Nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate nothing so childish
At a better pace, slower and more calculated, no chance of escape
Now self-employed, concerned, but powerless
An empowered and informed member of society, pragmatism not idealism
Will not cry in public, less chance of illness, tires that grip in the wet
Shot of baby strapped in back seat, a good memory still cries at a good film
Still kisses with saliva, no longer empty and frantic like a cat tied to a stick
That's driven into frozen winter shit, the ability to laugh at weakness
Calm fitter, healthier and more productive a pig in a cage on antibiotics

The ending was a bit too Hallmark for me. I prefer Blake or Wordsworth myself.
