[Jungian Cognitive Functions] FPs: yes, we CAN tell the difference between someone being natural vs fake

it's more than just depending on the said Fi user's values, it's a means of detecting internal congruence/incongruence. you seem to have an "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" approach to life, but, frankly, such an approach denies the negative aspects of life and human nature, and the negative aspect of human nature that is the topic of this thread is simple. "People are fake and it is easy to see through". people cannot grow if no one confronts them directly with their problems and forces them to see them for what they really are (for example, this is the whole idea behind the Enneagram. lots of people on typology forums think it is a tool to make them feel "special", but it is entirely the opposite and, if used correctly, is designed to reveal the deepest, darkest fixations and unconscious and irrational thought/behavior patterns of people).

Even if that was my approach to life, it doesn't "deny" anything. Denial is when someone refuses to accept something, not when someone refuses to jerk-off in public.

Yes! Congruence with your values!

If ones growth must depend entirely on others, they will never grow. Ever. Force doesn't necessitate growth, it necessitates trauma.

I'm sorry for refusing to jerk off in public

no, congruence is some set of values. I know plenty of socialists who are internally congruent and I certainly don't share their values

- life can confront you or you can confront yourself, either way, there is a confrontation period in learning the harder lessons of life. though I agree that depending on others to do this limits the amount one can grow
- force is necessary sometimes, particularly for small children, but that force must be used appropriate (never out of anger and not in excess) and must be coupled with clear communication which often necessitates being blunt about certain negative aspects (though as a whole, I prefer more frequent use of rewards than punishment, but I'm getting side tracked). that said, I don't think force was the best choice of words, but the point remains, growth is often an unpleasant and painful experience, but these experiences help us grow, become stronger and become wiser, and sometimes, this means that people need to face some REALLY harsh realities about themselves. they do NOT necessitate ensuing psychological trauma.

This thread sounds like it's just meant to be a personal jerk-off fest for you.

This is what I'm forced to envision Elfboy doing every time he starts a thread like this.

We seem to be tied together like Mexican handcuffs. Like Bonnie and Clyde. Like counting and choculaism.

I call shenanigans upon thee, rapscallion fiend! You don't even have a "real" "type" so how would you even know if I have or don't have Fi? Hmm? HMM? I ooze Fi. Everytime I walk Fi pours out of my pores like liquid gold. You wouldn't know Fi if it bit you on your foot.

*bites*

You now have Fi-rabies. You are frothing at the mouth with Fe-rage. You are a sad sad sad poster.

I feel bad for you.

Being all "Fe" "fe"aring Fi and the power that Fi has because Fi can see into your nonexistent soul and see what a horribly ungenuine person you are behind your pleasant facade of crazy Fe hugs and love and your driving need to make everything be harmonious. Quite frankly you make me sick but I pity you so much more that my compassionate Fi heart triumphs and rises above this petty moment wherein I can fly free above you and your grounded Feness.

It's ok.

*puts your Fidog down with her Fivet powers*

I'm using my special cognitive function powers to detect that you're being ironic and actually do not mean what you are saying to Jaguar.

I resist summing people up so simply. I may sense someone is being "fake" in a moment, but I don't judge them as fake over all.

I've been totally fooled by people too.... It wasn't a matter of not trusting my instincts, but that person being very good at fooling people. Other times, I wanted to give the person the benefit of the doubt, because I saw potential in them.

For example, I know this ENFJ who can seem phony (one of the only ENFJs I know who actually fits that stereotype), and I'm not the only one who thinks so. He has a rep for it... However, unlike many who dismiss him as totally phony, I see genuine motive driving it. He's phony nice, but the nice is a genuine desire to treat people well, with the phony aspect being a matter of him not personally finding someone appealing. Understanding why people are being fake is huge, IMO.

I'd like to say my knack is to understand WHY people likely are a certain way over knowing for sure they ARE that way & making a simplistic judgment that labels them.

Most perceptive people have that ability to an extent. :D There is usually a subtle tenseness in the room if someone is acting "unnatural".

I have an INFP friend, he has the potential to be as phony as they come when meeting new people. Technically everyone has the potential to be a bit phony in said situation since we all have the ability to feel and perceive. Deception is a great tool to save energy in situations where excessive small talk is involved; I don't see why everyone is so obligated to have a consistent experience with another individual. I guess it would be more acceptable if said individual mastered their skills of deception, lazy bastards!

It really helps online. RL isn't really as good because you still have to find a way to interact with people full of BS and not give off the vibe that you know they are full of BS. Online you can just avoid them and watch other people enjoy rolling in the BS. It's amazing how many people find BS "mysterious"

It actually helps me avoid drama queens, too.

INFJs think that Ni gives them this ability. Fi-doms think Fi gives them this ability. Hmmm. I'm trying to figure out how this all fits together. (And failing, so far.)

If Fi doesn't give it then I still have it but it's just part of being a super special awesome person.
