my sister is an enfp too and i feel like she's an enfp on overdrive...like some characteristics are over pronounced in her and some not enough...we're just all different people who have the same basic tools...or something like that.

Yeah I wonder how much "ENFP" hatred is misdirected from another type. We can seem similar.

And here I thought you were going to take my smiley-face and my apology...

You're breaking my heart there. [And now I'm obligated to dissect this.]

I really didn't say any of that...at all. It's very imaginative and full of new possibilities, but it really doesn't accurately reflect anything I said. Use your feelings to make judgments all you want. Just STOP reminding us on every single "Why does x type act this way?" thread that "it's only unhealthy ones!!" because that goes without saying whenever you're discussing any kind of generalizations. It's not wrong or invalid, as you seem to have daydreamed me saying; it's simply unnecessary to point it out, because everyone knows, and it gets old hearing it again and again.

Ok, why do we repeat the "obvious"? My guess would be our natural resistance to being categorized and our desire to leave things open for possibilities, combined with the emotional charge of a negative evaluation. (Among our list of defects "sensitivity to criticism" is pretty up there.)

Is stating-the-obvious-over-and-over-because-we-feel-like-it a rational response?

No. You're right. It makes no sense.
Yet we still do it because it's our natural inclination.

To then have the nerve to be prescriptive by telling us to stop while calling NFs idiots (Check your two previous posts) - is the equivalent of asking us to deny those inclinations, in order to serve your inclinations.

Now, among other types, the literature says that ENFPs are capable of empathizing with anyone. [Which is true, lock me in an empty room with a plastic cup, and eventually I'll totally understand its feelings.] So you'll generally find that we'll do our best to temporarily accommodate you.

But that is most ENFPs.
I'm a little rusty on my empathy lately.

Also, I get the sneaking suspicion you don't really want empathy from us but genuine respect for your search for truth - tolerance for your aggressive debates.

This is when you employed the ENTP-as-fundamentally-anti-authoritative-argument, as an excuse for the lack of PC.

That was the cue! Look at the other responses. "Oh, yes.. you're right. We're so patronizing. We must be really annoying." - translation into Xellotathian: "Look at that puppy! It's so angry, and it says it's because it doesn't get social etiquette! It doesn't know better than being loud and mean! Aww ok! We'll stay out of its way."

Call me a hypocrite but I just felt one of my values being violated. [Real attempt at understanding vs Empathy]

THEREFORE!

The best solution was to get on your level and to return generalizations back at you. It's why I tried to place you in that nasty little paradox which is not your fault but ultimately rooted in the nature of the thread. [Which was unfair, I admit.. I was a little mean there. But alas, criticism -does- make me a bad girl.]

As for infuriated vs irritated. That might be a personal conflict to you and me. To be irritated is being simply snide. Infuriated is writing in Caps and calling people idiots.

It's natural for me to make assumptions about the other person's hypothetical emotional state - though to be frank, I would normally keep them to myself and keep waiting for more information before judging.

Possible-counter argument to my post: Defense of inclinations as the famous "hidden ENFP elitism". [But you're old enough to defend yourself.]

OK - I see several people talking down online type testing and doubting others' results... To those people - Where do you suggest someone get tested?

i don't agree with that alexx. silly imo...i realize tests can be unreliable but if you read the description and learn about the type and you know it fits you then imo there's no reason to question it.

but if you aren't sure...then i guess a professional test would help but i don't think it's necessary for it to be accurate.

i think the differences between types comes from different strengths of expression...like we have the tendency to be dramatic and overly emotional and i know i can be but people who meet me irl would never use those words to describe me...but they probably would my enfp sister.

Hmm, my ENFP friend has not expressed much introspection and inner analysis to me, really. That's not to say she doesn't do it. But some more conversation with her lately has lead me to rethink my initial supposition on her type. Seeming more ESFP to me lately, she definitely commands the center of attention due to her bombast, like Elaur said.

Almost certainly ESFP. The two types are actually not that similar, and you wouldn't mistake them as often as people think.

Portrait of an ENFP

Careers for ENFP Personality Types

Clear descriptions of ENFP type are difficult to find. We seem to have a lot of chameleon to us, because of the ungrounded nature of Ne Fi. We basically have that strong intuition of the ENTP, and just some core values to keep it in check, so it wanders anywhere. And though most of the descriptions are right (technically), I doubt you could spot an ENFP irl from them.

My mum who is INFJ would sum me up as "potential". The type that you would believe could achieve anything, but never get around to doing it. A lot of ENFPs have multiple university degrees, whether they specialise or work in that area is another thing. I read we average 2 years in the same work area before we get bored of it.

Yup, that's the way I experience it too. Most people actually don't really have a clue I'm very emotional (except for the happy emotions:newwink:), but a lot goes through me and people that know me well know this.

Its probably more the fact that I hate being portrayed as some wussy when I get publicly emotional, because I ain't. Sadly, many people lay the link between 'emotional' and 'weak' very quickly, which probably prohibits me from letting it all go. Also, it might be a cultural thing. I think the Dutch are quite down-to-earth, both-feet-on-the-floor kinda people, which I actually don't mind though:newwink:.

I don't know, could this also be a typical male ENFP thing? Anybody willing to enlighten me on this?:)

Well agreed. I can't think of that many people who, after learning about MBTI, would type me as ENFP. I said this once and I'll say it again : "People definitely have a problem coming to terms with the fact another person (that would be me) can be silly and extremely down-to-earth one second, and talk about hardcore philosophical/political/whatever stuff the next.". I can't stress that out enough, really.

I couldn't agree with this more. ...but not you AwesomeCakes. ;)

I get annoyed with the particularly bubbly and social ENFPs. It reminds me of myself in high school which I find kind of embarrassing.

Yeah, I hear you. It's really hard for people to grasp that there are different sides/layers to a person. People are often shocked that I can put on my silly switch one moment & then engage in abstract conversations the next.

I'm 50-50 in the E/I. I like to be alone with my thoughts to recharge from everything just as much as I like to be out there connecting with people & experiencing things. People at work in the beginning accused me of being aloof because I didn't socialize with them too much outside of regular interactions. I didn't really engage in too many conversations, but if someone approached me I would have one-on-one chats with them. I started to make an effort to be more talkative & now everyone thinks of me in a different light. My boss & co-workers addressed me recently on the change & let me know they love this open/silly/random person much more than the introverted/shy person they saw before. They always thought something was wrong when there really wasn't anything wrong! Argh. I like that side of me actually, but when I am in that zone...there are so many misinterpretations being made. I wasn't trying to come across unapproachable, I am just more calm & reflective that way. I really hate being misunderstood.

Question for the ENFP's: Do you get misunderstood often? Is this common amongst you guys?

Yeah - I match all the "portraits" to a T - I couldn't believe it when I read it. I had never imagined that a summary from someone/something that doesn't really know me could be so accurate. Then I lurked here for a few months and one day I couldn't take it anymore. It was the "You know you're an ENFP when..." thread. I just had this burst of excitement and wanted to just bust into the room, hug all of you, and plop down on the floor listening. It was SO SO NICE to find others that were so similar in so many ways, after being told my whole life that I was too touchy feely, or too lofty, or too trusting, or naive for believing that at the core people are good. Or even being scolded for my inability to finish ANYTHING EVER (besides work).

I just see people saying that others are "mis-typed" or that they don't trust internet tests - so I figured the best way to be SURE was to find out where to take what some consider a "real" test.

Oh yeah. Yours is a good example of what happens to me sometimes. I've been called anti-social before. I mean, wtf! Me? Anti-social?? Sometimes I just like to be pensive and people misunderstand that. And I also made an effort to be more social after hearing that. And some people were very surprised to see the "new me". Unbelievably so.
