Ok, we know those "emo" beings, they say they are emotional, misunderstood, their life is wasted in 15 and so on.. you know how it goes
But are they actually NFs? Or are they only something like posers? What proportion of :emot-emo: might truly be NFs? huh?

I'll say they're definitely (unhealthy and/or immature) F types. Not so sure on the N, though.

To be honest, I'd say anyone has the possibility of falling into that pit. Type probably isn't a good indicator, as "emos" have all kinds of different reason for being so. Some just can't see a meaning to life, while others struggle to meet the expectations of life and give up. It's easy to say that a T could never fall into that, but it's not true. Everyone has the potential to experience those kind of thoughts, and being "emo" is a (not very healthy, mind you), way of dealing with it.

By the way, real 'original' emo's are nothing like the stereotype's that has become emo's on the internet. But I assume you mean the stereotypical emo. :p

Isn't that like asking if all NT's are cyberpunk? :D

I don't think it's NF. Whatever the "spoiled and bored upper middle class suburban white kid teenager" type is.

Most of the "emo" people I know in real life are SFPs...but I think anyone has the potential.

...even Ts. Especially the ones who aren't good at dealing with their feelings.

LOL

You win, Jock.

What makes you think NFs are emotional, depressed, and misunderstood?

original emo kids: NiFe + SiFe (meaning introverted perceivers) sometimes enfj + enfp (but that fashion is screaming Fe imho)

(...horribly misunderstood by the text below this image :D :( :( :( :cry:)

but that is not true for the musicians. it's also not true for random steetkids who adopt the style

gothic people = FiNe or anyone who like sex and has a borderline distortion (from estp to intj) the emotion of pathos, that underlies gothic, works best with Fi.

allot of people don't understand on which side of the gothic / emo dichotomy they belong.
or they act like its the same thing. their bad.
cure for instance is not on the emo side, its mostly gothic, but is actually fairly compatible.

It's not that they are misunderstood, it's that they misunderstand. I think. :p

Okay, so "emo" is a kind of subculture wherein the kids dress in a particular style (tight pants, graphic t-shirts with punk band insignias, fish head shoes, and an odd haircut that covers one of their eyes) and are supposedly into Tim Burton films and poetry? I guess since the idea behind them is that they are overwhelmed by the sadness of life, and they want to create deep and meaningful works of art to portray that sadness, it seems like more of an NF thing. But the constituents of the subculture needn't all be NFs, even though the idea behind it is NF leaning.

Exactly.

Emo was a mid-late 90's cultural underground development, and by the late 90's - early 2000's it was already a largely stereotypical and non- to partially-underground social scene, made up, I'd wager, by at least 50% posers. :D The Indie rock scene developed at the same time but was separate, but in some people's minds (mainly outsiders) Indie kids and emo kids are the same (this has been a misconception for years now). But by now, both groups are largely made up of people in it for the social aspect. So anyone could be emo whose friends are emo. It could be full of SJ's, SP's and NF's, (and maybe NT's) but I'd argue that to identify with EMO you probably have to be an F. ST's are known for using the slur "gay" to describe how lame being emo is.

emo=extroverted feeling=marylin manson=enfj
gothic=the cure or oomph!=introvert feeling

i am talking about the feelings, not about how some wikipedian defines the genres.

gothic is pathos, guilt, intrinsic anger, owned freedom, obsession with evil to relax the intrinsic perfectionism (Fi)
emo is yearning, hurt anger, crying for freedom, obsession with expression and freedom (Fe)

satanism=gothic for NT

punk=emo for istp

if that is not true, for examples in your dirty reality neighborhood, then these examples just don't know who they are/ought to be*.
identity distortion is to be expected.

*that includes ENFJ who act like they are bad SJ cliches, denying their true emo self.

also leave britney alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Indie rock" is just the new term to replace "alternative rock" after the term alternative rock was taken over by the mainstream radio in the early 90s and made generic. Indie rock music now is clearly derivative of the alternative & college rock of past eras. There were other terms before that also... Music is so hard to define, that I get a headache every time I discuss these terms though :D

I think emo tends to be ISFPs, if we're talking emo as a subculture and scene, not so much the streamlined trend that has emerged (which is probably whatever types like to hop on the bandwagon :cough:ESFPs:cough: ). It seems more of a sensory thing, as style is emphasized, and there's expression of feeling, but it's not particularly poetic. I notice the lyrics being much more direct, with less abstraction and metaphor.

As far as being emotive and drawn to dark things, then that may be any IxFx, even INTP's & ENFx's too. I would see NFs as more "indie" than "emo" though. It tends to be less about image, and it features more "out there" poetic lyrics. The music is less palatable to mainstream because of that. I think in another thread Candyland Joe described certain INFP music as swallowing glass and ISFP music as honey :D. That's all generalizations of course...

Ultimately, I think any type can listen to any kind of music. I think who makes the music is more related to type than who gets into a scene. People get into music for such a variety of reasons, and sometimes we like something for the very reason that it expresses how we feel in a way we cannot do ourselves.

Yeah, or SFP's.

I have always though that I have the emotions and maybe the personality of an emo. The melancholic lifestyle, bringing meaning and inspiration from sadness.

to nanook:

Satanism inequals gothic for NT. It's a religion, unbiased to personality type.

Satanism has some of the pathos ideals you mentioned, if not most (guilt and obsession with evil are the only ones I saw that didn't fit), but it doesn't fit into a cultural category. Punk, Emo, Goth fit into a category. Satanism fits in with Christianity Buddhism and Scientology.
