I watch movies, but not religiously or right away (I'll probably wait until a lot of the Oscar bait comes to DVD) cause I'm not particularly fond of theaters. Looking at wikipedia, seems like I've seen 22 movies released this year. I'd probably see even fewer if movie-going wasn't such a popular social activity.

On the subjective level, I judged by a) how much I enjoyed the experience of seeing it, b) how interested I stayed in the story (I can get rather antsy), c) how much it impacted me and d) whether I would ever want to watch it again. I've only seen all of these once and am aware some movies are growers.

Loved it:
1. Slumdog Millionnaire (5/5)
2. Tropic Thunder (5/5: I bust a gut laughing.)

Good/Would still willingly rewatch on own:
3. WALL-E (4/5: It's so perfect until the humans enter the story. Then, eh.)
4. The Spiderwick Chronicles (3.5/5)
5. The Forbidden Kingdom (3/5: Rewatchibility and nostalgia factor ups it.)

Better than Mediocre/Would Fast Forward through the Boring Parts:
6. The Fall-DVD (3.5/5: Fastforward through all the "beauty" parts)
7. Quantum of Solace (3.5/5: Better than Casino Royale, yeah, I said it- fastforward through the first few action sequences, parts with Bond alone)
8. Iron Man (3/5: Anticlimatic)
9. The Bank Job-DVD (3/5)
10. The Dark Knight (3.5/5)

Anyone want to start a worst ten list?

I've probably seen less movies this year than any recent year I can remember, which is a crime. So my scope is less than all-encompassing, and this list is close to useless.

That said, my favorite movies this year that I saw were:

1. Wall-E
2. Slumdog Millionaire
3. The Dark Knight
4. Iron Man
5. Ghost Town
6. The Matador

On the Dark Knight - I just don't understand what is so great about the Dark Knight. So many people love this film. Can someone please tell me why? I watched and was nodding off the whole time. Besides Ledger's performance, I thought it was actually below average.

On the Happening - yes I agree, very underrated, very subtle, and it might be easy to miss the point of it all. I think a lot of folks expect M. Knight Sham to remake Six Sense. Um, he's consistently made terrific films that are not the sixth sense.

On Wall E - I liked this film but not enough to place it in my top ten.

On Tropic Thunder - Blackface is not funny. Period. When did this country become so ass-backwards that a blackface film can not only get financed, but a major actor had no problem playing the character. I don't understand why dressing up as a 'black dude' or putting on an afro wig at a football game or dressing up as a pimp for halloween is supposed to be funny. It's completely racist and disgusting.

Haven't seen Bashir, Sarah Marshall, Cloverfield or Rachel getting Married yet, but they're on my list.

On Benjamin Button - This film tries too hard to be Forrest Gump.

1. Man on Wire

I'm severely disappointed in all of you who listed Iron Man. Most over-rated film of 08.

Racist and disgusting? In that vein I suppose the Chappelle show was racist and disgusting? Lighten up! While I didn't think 'blackface' (Robert Downey Jr.) was too funny I thought all the spoofs in the film were just great, especially the 'Apocalypse Now' scene.

I didn't see enough movies to get a top ten, but the movies overall that I saw and enjoyed in 2008, in no particular order:

Man On Wire
Dark Knight
Tropic Thunder
Pineapple Express
WALL-E
Iron Man

The Dark Knight

The Fall
In Bruges

Burn after reading
Hellboy II
The curious case of Benjamin Button
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Traitor
Felon
Pineapple Express

felt up - Benjamin Button is nothing Forrest Gump. Unless you mean a movie that takes place over the course of the life of a peculiar man.

I agree about Tropic Thunder not being funny although not really for the same reasons.

That Dark Knight...well...if you don't appreciate Batman/comics in the first place, the movie's draw is going to seem almost inexistent but it is a movie about a comic character so....but it's the best one ever made IMO. Plus it has that hint of Nolan magic that keeps you guessing.

Sorry, but I can't praise a film where blackface is the main attraction and no one seems to think there is anything wrong with it. If you can't tell the difference between the brilliance of Chappelle and the lackluster, "I'm a black dude, playing a dude" of Downey, then you couldn't truly understand my disgust. I do happen to think some racist humor is funny. Lisa Lampinelli is hilarious. Downey in blackface. Not funny.
