You know, the people who really need to learn how to use smilies are those NTs that have the cynical, dry kind of humor (I've seen this kind of humor really much with NTs). This is because I don't know them as well as I should to get that they are most likely joking. IRL I like that kinda humor but here it is sometimes impossible to tell if it is a joke or not. My insufficient English skills of course don't make it any easier.

But if we used emoticons with our dry humor, it would cease to be dry humor!

Yeah, I know. It is a problem. But the current situation is intolerable... Something has to be done.

There are some emoticons like that can be used
It would just mirror the expression on your face as you state your 'dry humor', hence adding your bodylanguage to your post.

As for not having the right emoticons all the time, there's always the * thing, for instance, I loved Jacks *catholic priest mode*

Smilies can kind of take the place of non-verbal cues in written communication, which is somethimes helpful.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Oh I don't know, something just didn't feel right...

I think I'll stick to only using them occasionally. It gives them more weight that way.

Yeah, I guess you're right. For the same reason I hardly ever use this one

Oh feel free to risk people not getting your jokes and be offended coz you're lazy about your communication skills
