Actually I can probably plot my life in chronological interests. Theres always been times where I've studied something so thoroughly that I actually gain a decent ability to apply the skills I've gotten in a general sense.

I don't know, thats the only time I'm really happy( just passionate and not default grumpy INTX), I would even say there were some times I wasn't, but in those situations my interest's were videogames and I frequented many video game review sites, online stores, message boards, books, as well as playing an absurd amount. It's actually kind of funny because I have a lot of bullshit leeway with my friends and family because of that. They take my word sometimes like its gospel because they know I've probably researched, studied, looked at it far more than they could imagine.

I would definitely say that NTP's interest can be intense. I think sometimes when your obsessed with people and emotions you sort of embrace the lows and highs, unless your sociopathic or an extreme thrill seeker you sort of have to take it that way. With ideas and hobbies you can maintain a high for much longer without negative consequences.

Before someone mentions romance novels, movies and whatever I think there is some need to counteract the highs, revel in the harmony and dwell on the lows. I don't think my interest cycles are that displaced and long lasting. they're usually consistently high and then they drop off pretty rapidly.

we ENFP's live life as a series of obsessions. we'll go completely nuts over something but when something new comes our way, our attention shifts completely to that and forget about the last project.

I think it's an Ne thing.

It depends on what the obsession is.
It probably does depend. I could say I find one obsession to engage in, try to turn the whole thing inside out so that I've completely experienced it, then after I feel I've gotten all I can out of it, leave and maybe find something else.

Maybe it depends on how we define obsession? I mean, after all, ISTJs are supposed to be the Obsessive-Compulsive type...

I think NF's would ride more of a roller coaster though. I wouldn't really describe mine as that. Like maybe a year or two ago I was pretty obsessed with sports, specifically baseball, that lasted for a long time and it was pretty consistent. I stretched that interest out into a lot of different things, a little nutrition, some physiology, exercise, statistics, media and print influence, PR, journalism... basically everything was sort of viewed through that lens for a while till a new interest came up and the same process would follow.

I think because its a more static and tangible thing I feel like no matter my mood, current focus I could always sort of relate it to something and I would have a lot of fun just making connections to everything. I don't know I just think that when its more of an intellectual or mental obsession you don't have to account so much for "passion." Even if it isn't as strong theres always something there thats not going away that can be studied more in depth or with more breadth. I wouldn't say its anything like that obsession I get if I meet a really nice girl, or theres a really big game on, some event or thing I'm really psyched about. I'm assuming that is more a long the lines of how NF's get obsessive but I obviously don't have a frame of reference.

I'm pretty obsessive. My mom used to point this out to me semi regularly growing up. I guess in a way it comforts me to always have something to preoccupy my mind with, usually resulting in an obsessive fixation of some sort. It can be with something like counting down the days to getting a new toy or a certain event to come to pass. Really anything...

I don't think you need to redefine obsession. People can obsess over nightly news, bands, sports teams, ideas, beliefs, fantasy worlds, music, planning, socialising, making money, strategy, work, etc.

From there, one could assign various functions to the obsessions of choice.

I can be very obsessive to the point where I feel completely drunk on the thing, person, whatever... But I can't stop it completely takes over my life and my consciousness there is no switching it off so I just have to wait until something else comes along. (I am being to get more breathing space now though, a little down time of like a minute!)

I don't know which types would be more likely to do this, but it's something I can relate to. I'll become addicted to something for a couple of months, and suddenly I'm not interested in it anymore. This happens with bands I listen to, computer games I play, and things I like learning about. With something like a computer game, I'll play it for four to six hour blocks daily. Some bands I obsess about for a few weeks. I'll listen to them almost exclusively and hunt any information about them I can find. After a while, I lose interest and ignore it for while. If I become interested again, it's rarely as intense. Maybe I saturated my brain and can't take more information. This isn't something that happens to me often anymore, but I'm more aware of it now than I was a few years ago.

I agree with NTPs.
That's why they are such a large percentage of this board, :D

I think Ne has a great influence, so I'd say INFPs (and therefore, ENFPs).
It's not like J types, who can (and usually are) be obsessed with something, but that obsession lasts way longer.

So, you're saying E/INFPs obsessions don't last as long as E/INFJs?

INFJ...or at least it's true for me.

It's like systematic ingestion for me sorta? Something sparkly (new concept, idea, cause, whatever...) grabs my eye... I lunge for its jugular and grapple it to the bitter end until I discover something else that must be completely absorbed and conquered.

Yay for determination!

This board. I need to ween myself off from it, or maybe just go cold turkey. Its killing my homework production( another reason I can justify putting it off)

Yikes! That makes for an easy loophole.
what about being obsessed for half a minute every time and a new obsession comes along?

Its not type related.

I tend to have a obsession that usually lasts about 1-3 months that I research and think about constantly, then I drop it and move on to something new or go back to an old one.

It makes it really hard to stick with anything long enough to become good, which sort of sucks. I have a dusty guitar sitting in the corner, unfinished drawings and paintings, half read books, and plenty of other projects left uncompleted.

I guess it has made me a pretty well rounded person though, so it's not all bad.
