I passively collect old books by authors I like.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

An example of #4 is Jokers from decks of old playing cards. I have some of the rarest in the world, going back to civil war days. ( Jokers were invented in the USA in the early 1860's. Of course the "Fool" tarot card goes back much further. That is a separate collection. )

This also touches on collections of other antique graphics that relate to Jokers, such as postcards with clowns, jesters, Punch and Judy, Jack-in-the-Box, Humpty Dumpty etc. And that is just one branch among many of this particular tree.

A large twig of this branch overlaps my books collection - the printed illustrations in my collection of early 20th century supernatural fiction, and some other books where illustration is key.

I forgot to mention that I also collect semi-precious stones and crystals.
