I mean like every action adventure movie is halfway based on it. Plot, theme, characters. Take or leave the swords.

The first Star Wars movie was really a breakthrough movie in a lot of ways though. Also while I like "Empire Strikes Back" a lot too, I only give it a 4.5 mostly because it doesn't stand on its own plot-wise. "A New Hope" can be taken out of the context of the other films without really losing anything. (There are a few other minor reasons why I like "A New Hope" better, but that is the main one.)
I have tried in vain to get people to understand that Empire is the lesser film for exactly this reason. The story structure just doesn't match up because it's the second in a trilogy and Lucas and his writers did not attempt to make it stand on its own.

I've never told anyone this but I really don't like any of the Lucas films or Lord of the Rings.

But I'll totally watch them just for the social aspect of it. Like people are always having these Lord of the Rings and Starwars parties where they make a bunch of pop corn and watch all the movies in a row. Those are really fun.

That sort of thing doesn't matter to me. You can't slag something off for being part of a larger series. Nobody thinks the first Harry Potter book is the best one, do they?

The variety in this thread (and obvious and inevitable different schemas for discerning quality among the posters) is giving me whiplash.

What movies do *you* like, Sunshine? (Or what do you look for in a movie?) I mean, it doesn't do much good to throw giant lists at you... unless you happen to be one of those rare people who have the patience/interest/free-time to watch a ton of movies.
