Default Women and the 80s. What's going on there?

I noticed a lot of girls seem to be infatuated with the 80s.

I was born then, but don't remember much except turtle neck shirts and parachute pants.

nah, the 90s are in pretty hard right now. but like gromit said, it's cyclical.

personally i think most 80s pop culture sucks and am glad i narrowly missed being born in that decade. except for prince and john hughes movies, of course.

What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?

    It retrieves the 80s.

I hate 80s fashion. I'm glad I was just semi-conscious in the three years I lived through them.

The eighties couldn't possibly have been fun. I wasn't even conceived yet.

    I'm not part of this.

I think of the dynamic of the 80s a little like the 20s - rebellious, excessive, high-flying, dynamic, a sense of "epicness" and a sense of timelessness. The economy was good and the people were happy, the tempo was up and music and fashion were expressive and creative. There was some grit but overall everything was on the upswing, bright neon colors, big hair, powerful love ballads. Not to mention that for people in my age bracket (presumably yours as well), it was what was "cool" when we were little - the culture of the adults we admired and sought to imitate. I think we have both a sense of laughing at its ridiculousness because we have a sense of removal from it and embracing its high points because it's close enough to still feel familiar and safe.
