Boy, I wish I had that kind of money on hand. My main computer is a laptop from 2007 that weighs a ton and has to be plugged in at all times. I'd love to upgrade.

If I were you, I'd put it aside and wait for a time when you have a use for it. A rule of thumb for my spending is that if I have to ask what I want to spend my money on, I probably shouldn't spend it until I'm sure what to spend my money on.

    True.

Like you've indicated, it's a balancing game. I ran my numbers this year and calculated that in the long run I was better off putting the big chunk of cash I got into an IRA and taking out a loan. It sounds stupid but because of the relative rates, the IRA was accruing more rapidly than the loan, which I could pay off quickly anyway. But if your owed money rate sucks, then there's no point in tucking money away while you're building up debt.

The country is experiencing an energy boom right now.

I've been paying close attention to companies with Oil plays in the Eagle Ford, Bakken, Niobara, and Marcellus fields.

Natural gas is a thing yo.

I am not a Motley Fool Fan (too much spam once you get on their list) but this is a pretty good list of things to do. You don't need to know much.

Forget 10 and 11. Also, if you invest in index funds. you don't need that many "positions". I never invest in individual stocks anymore. It's just gambling.

That's nice. If I had that much money I would probably update my computer, buy a new phone and lots of clothes. But at least $1000 would go to charity.

My bosses have spent too much money on Ferraris and Bentleys and can't afford to give us Christmas bonuses at all. I've been working there for five years now and I've never received a Christmas bonus. I'm being deadly serious, it is the tragic tale of the undervalued employee.

If you're still trying to find a use for that money I could take into protective custody for you. Keep it safe in my account for a bit.

I've never received a Christmas bonus either. It's not that they are being generous or ungenerous. It's a planned component of the compensation system.

On occasion in my career i would receive a Christmas bonus, albeit piddly amounts. Government also used to provide bonuses, at least the first year I was here, although your branch chiefs had to squabble for the money. But that stopped with the cost of living increases a few years ago, so... no bonuses.

About the best thing I got was when some years back my company got sold and I got "phantom stock options" that eventually came to term and ended up being worth about $4-5K. I paid for my LASIK with it.

    $12K sounds pretty cray.

Maybe your bosses aren't but I don't think it's really the case where I work. I'm not aware of a single compensation claim made against them in their history (the closest we get is the occasional insurance claim via an incident with one of the company's vehicles) and if they did the company generates a lot of revenue and would be able to afford both claims and bonuses. Besides, it doesn't have to be that much, £10 or £20 would at least be appreciated.

I need to get another job. My previous job back in the day was a lot smaller and managed to pay the staff. IIRC I got £200 or so despite being a newbie.
