    Robots are akin to simplified forms of life.

    We'd be less complex basically. Though this is dependent on the level of programming, how the programming functions etc.

    The least complex robots are inherently dependent on a host. Think viruses.

    Once a certain level is reached, the only distinguished quality is that they're metal, and other lifeforms - duplicating cells.
