    Thumbs up Film/TV Recommendation Thread

Yeah, I'm doubling down on the recommendation thread idea.

Post here if you're looking for a new movie or a show to watch. You post a film or show, director, actor, or genre/mood and get a recommendation.

Spontaneous contributions of good films or television shows are welcomed, but please label the recommendation or somehow otherwise specify who might be into that particular recommendation.*

*Special note for non-requested TV recs: yes, we are all fully aware that Mad Men/The Wire/Breaking Bad/The Sopranos are The Four Greatest Show ever devised. Those that come in to proclaim the greatness of one of The Four without some Kael on Tango kind of watershed shit to say about them will be judged...harshly.

    To kick off:

I just got done watching Scandal, and am feeling pretty good about it and Shonda Rhimes. I'm considering Grey's Anatomy, but if I'm going medical drama shouldn't I just go House? Obviously there's watching both, but there's only so much soapy bullshit I can watch at a time.

    Thoughts?

I find House boring. Kinda like Charlie Sheen's character, he's just gonna be an asshole all the time, so it's like watching the same thing over and over.

    ---------

I wanted to watch something violent, with a lot of action (too much dialogue bores me), with melancholic undertones, and an ending that's not happy.

    Ideas?

Good examples: City of God, The Prestige, Lucky Number Slevin.

Have you seen No Country for Old Men?

It may have a touch more dialogue than you're looking for, but there's still a fair bit of action and the tone of the movie pretty grim.

I think your examples do not fit your description. I am going with the description, anyway:

I recommend, in this order, 'A Better Tomorrow', 'The Killer' and 'The Boondock Saints' (the latter not because I find it recommendable, but because I think you might like it).

    -----------

I myself am looking for a really good thriller, something akin to 'The Day of the Jackal' (1973) or 'Zodiac' (2007).

I've seen both and I personally recommend Grey's over House. The cast gets bigger and it's easier to find at least one person you like. Plus I need more people to talk about it with. *sobs*

If you're into the whole anime scene, I recommend Cowboy Bebop. It's episodic with a decent bounty each time, while building some melancholic character development along the way. I don't watch much action so that's the best I could do, sorry. A lot of non-anime watchers enjoy it as well though.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I'll take a while to watch.

The description was poor, indeed. Anyways, by 'a lot of action' I implied movies on which there's not much pause between significant developments. I disliked The Wire and stopped watching Game of Thrones because of that.
