I actually find your avatar to be quite paradoxical, oddly enough.

It is a profile picture of a beautiful beagle who looks stern, self-dignified and confident, almost like a cat.

I would have to gain his permission/approval to pet him.

Your observation is very astute. My original beagle avatar was a bit too playful looking. However, my current one is cute yet dignified.

Death in alchemy is mostly metaphorical, when the reaper draws anxiety is it usually a fear of change, of death of parts of self that we want to cling to but may not be working. Physical death comes to us all and when it is our time, we have to come to grips with our fear of it and close out our life properly. I have seen people fear death so much, they don't create closure with their loved ones and leave pain in their wake over it. I am not saying give up self suvivial instincts, but just to realize that each day we all face death as possiblity.

Our modern view of death has become more anxiety ridden and unnatural than it was in times past. We now try to deny death and some people so afraid of dying they cannot live. It ossifies them.

The smiley face, in effect, portrays Death as being perverted and menacing.

How does the idea of a mask clash with the idea of the classic trickster for example one like Mercurius? The trickster is cunning and shrewd and fools us, but he is also transformative and if those transformations are beneficial, then he is a friendly trickster. The "grotesque" smiley face is the most compelling thing about the avatar. Without it, the whole tone of meaning changes.

Sorry, I got a little too excited about the death symbolism and that anyone wanted to talk about it.

    In what sense?

Does the smiley face unhinge the sinister element, or add to it?

The concept of disguising death under a friendly visage is somewhat uncommon in most Western circles, I'd guess.
