I'm going to run some of my pics from this weekend through Photoshop now that I have some clue what I'm doing. Most of my Photoshop knowledge is over 10 years old--it's just not the same product!
A combination of lightroom and photoshop looks the way to go.

I've been very impressed with Lightroom. The main reason is the diskspace.

Shooting in raw, as I do is about 6mb a shot. Developed as 16bit photoshop files they grow to 36mb. So, typically, I'll take 400 shots on a week's photo holiday which means 2 or 3 gb of diskspace, which quickly grows to 6 or 7 with develops. Which quickly gets unmanageable.

Lightroom is non destructive, so just stores the instructions needed to develop the picture, so the raw file at 6mb, doesn't get any bigger when finished in photoshop. This is a major improvement for me.

But, sometimes photoshop is essential, large amounts of changes are needed to some images, and the 36mb file is the only way to go. With lightroom, one can do, easily, a photoshop edit of a raw file, that takes the lightroom develop settings and then puts them into a photoshop. The photoshop file is then stacked in lightroom on top of the original, which is hidden.. so seamlessly it is possible to have lightroom and photoshop (lightroom wherever possible, as it is quick and easy and low on diskspace) and photoshop where essential for more major editing.

Apologies for sounding a lightroom fanboy, but it is superfast at cataloguing and searching through files, metadata and the like. Way better -faster and more usable -than Adobe Bridge which is part of Photoshop nowadays.

Finally, here's an image finished like this in photoshop from a lightroom develop - the photoshop part is the selective light toning on the rocks in the sea.

Someday I will start taking landscape pictures.

This one needs more selective lightening, I think.

But these are the kind of thing I like better.... And insects, of course.
