Aww, Latinos are wonderful. While overseas I spent a lot of time hanging out with Ecuadorians and Columbians in particular - they're so full of love and warmth for their fellow human beings. I must say, the Colombians have such a lust for life and really know how to party.

AND they have the best swear words, which they are always keen to pass on to others.

I've always wondered whether or not being from Brazil means you're a Latino/a... I mean, it's the only country there without some variation of Spanish as its official language, and, ethnically speaking, a lot of us consider ourselves "white" first and foremost.

Yes, we are! The old Anglo-Saxon America/ Latin America division was meant to subtly separate the 1st world from the 3rd world.
Anglo-Saxon America = US and Canada
Latin America = South America +Central America + Mexico.
    Which makes us Latinos

    That's a relevant information.

I meant in terms of ethnicity, not necessarily geography. Which is to say, I kind of wonder if Americans can tell we're from Latin America by our appearance alone.

I see. That's an interesting question.

I once got in a very interesting conversation with a doctor in brazil over stereotypes of one anothers countries by the other country... we were laughing about things such as:

not all brazilians live in the jungle
elephants do not live in the jungle with the brazilians
not all brazilians live in favelas and worship soccer
sports other than soccer are played in brazil
brazilians don't speak spanish and aren't all brown people with black hair
brazilians have electricity, running water AND the internet!

    on the other hand
not all people in the US are rich
nor do we all go to college
we aren't all good looking either (thank you novela set in Miami for THAT one )
we have homeless people in the US as well
we aren't all the stereotypical NASCAR fan
not all people in the US are idiots about the rest of the world
some of us can survive indefinitely without mcdonalds

though I fear that I accidentally confirmed the belief that all people from the US use their fingers when eating

Thank you. You know that Simpsons episode where they go to Brazil? I can't tell how much of it was satire/parody and how much was lack of research.

Also, we don't have elephants. And I couldn't care less about soccer, though we have loads of fans around here - including my dad. And I don't live in a slum. And we have lapstops and HDTVs. And I'm whiter than Wonderbread. And our capital is neither Rio de Janeiro nor São Paulo, thank you very much*.

    * Rio used to be our capital several decades ago. Update yer atlases!
