I am terrible at the alphabet. I like to blame grade school because I always cheated by looking up at the alphabet posters that lined the wall of the room when I was doing my work. So, really, its schools fault. They enabled me.

Sorry, but I'm an "importee"... so I'm not sure if I might skew the data... My first exposure to the alphabet is with the song... and that becomes stuck in my head. There's also no need for me to name off the sequence under time pressure... therefore I've never learnt to not use the song.

Heh. I remember when I was little I thought elaminopee was one letter.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

The tune was originally a French nursery rhyme and the melody was first published around 1770 in what would today be a "top ten hits" transcription for the mainstream. Mozart is the one who made if famous worldwide with his variations about 25 years later.

The Twinkle Twinkle Star version used the melody made popular by Mozart to match the words of a poem during the early 19th century while it was still a popular favorite. The alphabet version dates from the middle of the 19th century.

    The chronological order is:
    French nursery rhyme
    Mozart variations
    TTLS
    ABC
    Baa Baa Black Sheep

Saturday Night Live did a sketch on the Metric Alphabet. One of the ten letters was "ellemeno".

Yes, I know it; and I did think ellemno was one word until I went to kindergarten and saw the letters printed above the blackboard.
