Usually they reflect a current interest and a mood associated with that interest

<< Current avatar, I picked because recently i've been getting into medieval alchemy, and I wanted to find a painting from the late middle-ages that would reflect that, so there ya go

I changed my avatar to my Prime Minister. But this puts me in a funny position as she leads a minority government and is only one vote away from oblivion. On the other hand Julia, our PM, is the only one who keeps the government together. So I expect she will be my avatar for the next two years of her elected term, but then I predict Julia will be re-elected against the odds, and we will have her for another three or four years.

I think it is nice to have a picture of a person as our avatar, and we all prefer look at a picture of a woman, so Julia is perfect.

I was browsing http://weheartit.com/ and found it randomly (check it out! you can search for tons of awesome images there). I love the vibe of the photo, her style is awesome, and she seems really fun, cool, and creative. Simply lovely .

Sometimes I see something I like, more often an idea hits me and I search for an avatar.

    I never have .

Can't exactly recall how I stumbled on it, probably was just curious about cats one day and liked the photo. Just wish that chain around the neck wasn't there, but... I don't think I'd want to be around that cat if it wasn't restrained in some fashion, either.

I changed my avatar because I got a major haircut compared to my "Thor" days,

    and...

My tan is better than ever this year.

I felt like the last one didn't reflect my personality at all. It was too bright and cheery.
