I've often wondered the exact same thing. When I get sucked in and read and make a few posts, I find that hours have slipped by. I actually don't hit the forums too often because of my fear of commitment. I'm baffled by some of these prolific posters.

Several weeks ago I intended to start a poll on this where people could place themselves on a scale between "Rapid Posting Skillz" and "No Life". I never got around to it because I didn't have the hours to spare.
    I'm not a procrastinator. I'm a long-term planner.

Same here. When I decide to post, I schedule about two hours for one in-depth response and then a short message or two.

I wondered if some of the prolific posters--the ones who post lots of long messages--might be using voice recognition equipment to speed up their posting (Dragon).

As far as reading: I don't use the New Posts function. Instead, I just skim and jump around among threads in favorite forums. Most stuff isn't worth reading closely. I don't even enter some forums. I just page around and look for subjects and messages that I might actually respond to (and also for the jokes and the laughs). Once I find something interesting, I slow down and read carefully.

I work online a lot (I have to fact-check on teh intarwebz). I tend to "reward" myself with a few minutes of posting after each segment of work. Some days, I post more than I work, sad to say.

I fear the chatroom the same way you fear the forum.

Other than lots of free-time, I seem to have lost how to keep it up. I suspect it has to do with motivation, which is significantly lessened from those days...
