    Default Rush

    I'm listening to Rush.

How many of you n00bs like this band? They're probably my favorite. Ever.

Of those who are fans, how many have > 1 album?

    how many have > 5?

I'm gonna make it a poll.

    Thumbs down

I have 3. Live CDs. Geddy Lee sounds like a girl and it started to annoy me for whatever illogical reason. Neil Peart is a fucking genius on the drums, in fact, all the guys are insanely talented, and unlike some progressive rock, the music isn't so intellectual that it loses it's soul. But still... Geddy Lee... "I will choose free will!" ...and I'll choose to change this fucking CD to Tool. Thanks but no thanks.

Tool is good too. Heavier rush + Primus.

    Excellent choice.

By the way, the new Rush stuff (Test for Echo - present) doesn't sound like what you're hating. He can't sing up high anymore (not well... ugh). His chords are worn the fuck out.

I want to fuck Tool's music. It's so intense and just so precise and accurate. And there's some great dissonance too. Trying to follow the time signatures is like walking through a maze. What's your favorite CD? I like Aenima a lot.

Fan would be too strong of a term. I like some of their work but not all.

I love Rush, or more specifically, Neil Peart. I could watch (and listen) to him all day. He is a drumming god.

I don't have any of their albums... I've never really struggled much with the time signatures -- always was an interest of mine, and came naturally anyway, which made Tool so attractive.

The precision and all that comes mostly, I think from good micing.... so often bands don't bother to spend much time on microphone placement but it makes a lot of difference. That's not to say that the players are bad, but having the mics in strange places can sort of muddle up the sound.

Bands like Godsmack (not a big fan except for what they have in the way of precision riffing and that melting distortion.... I want a Mesa Boogie) and In Flames among others including Tool really know what they're doing. I wonder if they have a producer in common or if several producers have found 'the golden ratio' for mic placement.

Anyway, those bands also have immensely talented players.

I love Rush. And they're great live, which can't be said for a lot of progressive rock. I think their lyrics are dopey a lot of the time, but that's true for a lot of music I love. It doesn't bother me. I like that they have a sense of humor too...it's easy to think a band that sounds like that is humorless. Definitely one of my 10 favorite bands, and have been for 20 years.
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight.
