I don't know how keen I am going to be on the violence but it is said to be very realistic in period detail for 18th Century.

Oh, that aspect is really quite minimal. The absence of the movie is not due to any worries of excessive graphic violence. I'd rather not spoil anything, so I won't say more.
    Not really.

Oh that is a relief then! The descriptions of the movie scared me in that aspect. If it was overly violent I would need to watch when husband not here because he would be really upset over it.

I can't wait to see Perfume! My faves:

    Princess Bride
    Galaxy Quest
    Serenity
    Army of Darkness
    Amelie
    Delicatessen
    City of Lost Children
    Monsters, Inc.
    Last Starfighter
    Apocolypto

That's all I can think of for now.

I can safely say that the movie doesn't go overboard in that respect. I would also say that the actual premise of the movie is potentially more offensive than the amount of violence contained within. So I can't actually guarantee whether your husband will like it or not -- but if he likes watching movies in general and keeps an open mind about movies' artistry, imagery, general direction as a visual medium, (again, amount of graphic violence notwithstanding) then I don't foresee Perfume being a problem for him. You know him best, of course! :)
    Not really.

I am begining to get the gist of what may lay at the core of the movie here. I best watch it alone, but again a relief that it is not excessive violence that gave the movie its "rep" so to speak.

To differentiate "obsessed" from just a straight list of favorite movies, I'm going to take "obsessed" to mean that you will watch the movie over and over again with no drop in enjoyment.

    Sixteen Candles
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    The Blues Brothers
    Jaws
    Raising Arizona
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight.

“Pleasure to me is wonder—the unexplored, the unexpected, the thing that is hidden and the changeless thing that lurks behind superficial mutability. To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty.” ~ H.P. Lovecraft
