    Default The Arctic

Does anybody here live really far north? What time does the sun set for you? What do you do with the extra daylight hours? Do you tend to go to bed a lot later in the summertime?

Please, give me some quantitative and qualitative details about this.

Really far south is ok too, I suppose, except that it is winter there...

I lived In Fort McMurray Alberta Canada for 3 years when I was a kid. Grade 3-6.

    56°43′35.8″N 111°22′46.9″W

This is pretty far north.. In the summer time It would start getting dark at around 11:45 pm and would be light again by 3:30 am.

In the summer as a kid ..It definitely effected bed time. With me often not even getting home from playing until "It starts getting dark".

The flip side was of course was very dark and very cold winters. When daylight would not be in full bloom until around 9:30 am and it would be pitch black by 3:00 pm. SO essentially the only sunlight we saw was at recess and lunch. We went to school in the dark and came home in the dark.. and when it's-30 degrees Celsius to boot.. It's bloody depressing , even for a kid.

    Ah cool.

I have heard that you can grow like GIGANTIC pumpkins and stuff too, because there is so much daylight. Can anyone verify it?

You wonder where winter goes when is snows, just as you wonder where the leaf goes.

Winter like rust never dies, it simply migrates. It migrates to a migrant country like Oz and slips in among the migrants unnoticed.

"Where do you come from?", we ask the leaf.

"From the other hemisphere", replies the leaf, "to escape the winter. Yes, we fly south for the winter to all your beautiful trees".

You know, Antarctic flora baffles me.

Once, well back in the prehistoric times, there were forests at the south pole. Now how on earth did all of these plants survive nearly 6 months without sunlight?
