I am not so much of a cake guy myself. I like only few cake sorts (mostly the ones considered "boring"), and even them I couldn't eat so much all the time. I find cake overrated as well - the cake is a lie.

Colored butter cream is gross, and those beautiful cakes look like poison to me. Especially if there is blue or rust-colored icing.
I decorate cake with whipped cream, buttercream-colored buttercream or mascarpone cream. Whipped cream and mascarpone cream gets real fresh fruit; buttercream gets chocolate sprinkles (chocolate colored), nuts,...
In short, my cakes aren't "beautiful" but they look like they are made of yummy things! Because, as you see, they are made of yummy things!

I said "cake" but the thing I'd decorate is really a biscuit (I don't know if this is the right English word): made with flour, sugar and eggs and without butter. It's light, not dense, and not suited for carving and other fun-looking but not-so-good tasting decoration. I absolutely love cake (the one with butter) without decoration and biscuit (the one without butter) with good-tasting decoration. I think lots of people hate cake because they associate it with the dense, carved things which are very beautiful to the expense of taste.

The look of food matters, but the taste is the most important. And the look has to affirm the taste, not contradict it. Food should look like food! [/soapbox]

So is "buttercream" the non-U.S. term for icing/frosting?

Edit: Wikipedia says that buttercream is only one kind of icing. I wasn't aware (and my tongue hasn't taken the energy to discriminate) of the different kinds of icing.

I like freshly baked sponge cake. It's so light and fluffly.
Caramel Mud Cake is good too.
But Ice cream cake is so much betterer.

It's the white-yellowish buttery stuff between the layers. Usually one or two layers of butter cream in some cakes.

To demonstrate. It's the layer just above the chocolate stuff in the bottom:

    It's gross! >.<

Cream cake? Ew. It's usually just sponge cake, jam in between the layers, maybe chocolate and cream + decoration on top.
It's the worst kind of cake ever.

    I like strawberry cheesecake.

Properly made rich fruitcake is the best, especially when the fruit component has been decently steeped in alcohol first. All you lightweight sponge-munchers don't know what you're missing!

Here's some nice whisky Dundee cake as an example:

Butter cream is cream made with butter and sugar.
Whipped cream is cream made with cream and sugar.
Marcarpone cream is mascarpone with sugar.
Royal icing is whipped egg whites with sugar.
Icing is sugar with water (or coffee, lemon,...).
Ganache is a thick, whipped chocolate cream.

Fondant is something industrially made to look like smooth icing. This is the one used on the beautiful cakes. The others are the tasty ones.

And that's as far as my icing/frosting vocabulary goes. I can make all the tasty ones, but prefer butter cream, whipped cream, mascarpone cream or ganache, as they are the worst looking and best tasting ones.
