    Hmm.

I can't take emoticons seriously. I usually use them ironically.

Well, irony represent your feelings in a way too. People have to find the irony maybe first, but the "intended message" represents how you feel, and thus the emoticons are honest to your own feeling. Or at least I see it that way.

I suppose, in a very indirect sort of way. But in the sense that one is serious, as in straightforward, certainly not

I use way too much smileys and emoticons. I'm usually feeling so much more, so the emoticons don't really convey the full range of my emotion at the time, or so it seems to me, but I am absolutely being serious every time I use them.

However, I also find it absolutely hilarious when people make quite harsh remarks or take a jab at somebody and then top it off with a smiley as if it could make everything alright.

my emoticon rule goes something like this... if lucille ball was reading what I posted what expression would she be making at that moment?

I'm signifigantly more expressive, both facially and emoticon wise than I am emotional!
haha...that is awesome...now i get to imagine her face with those expressions every time you post...how much fun for me!

haha...but it's even more important to do it then!

    like look...
    omg i hate you!

    or... ughh...i HATE you!!!

see...now ya know the first one is said jokingly with a smile and the other one was not.

    I use them emoticonally.

    (And use irons ironically.)

I put smilies to change people's perception of my posts to certain tones. If Im not being serious in my post I may put a more silly smilie than if I was being serious.

everybody jokes about ebola, and then when they actually do contract it, it's freakin' hilarious.

^add a smiley like or and it's a playful joke

add and it could be playful or potentially snarky

add nothing and it lends itself more to sarcasm than playfulness.

    just a [tangential] thought
