I had this discussion with a friend today. His kids like to watch Duck Dynasty, which I was told airs on A&E. I said "Yeah, that's 'art' and 'entertainment' right there. Remember when A&E aired Biography?"
That's what happened to all of those educational channels. History used to show documentaries and movies, now it's all Pawn Stars (which, to be fair, I like a lot save for the obviously staged stuff and the focus on negotiating. If they'd just show people bringing in cool stuff it would be awesome.). TLC used to be The Learning Channel; now it's the "Dang ol' Honey Boo Boo I tell you what man, done gone dem ol' piggly wiggly" channel.
EDIT: Apparently I am a bigot for failing to recognize the 'artistic' value and 'entertainment' to be derived from so-called "Southern culture". Thanks, person-who-left-me-that-rep.
