If 3 people are exceeding the speed limit, you don't just hand one of them a ticket.
I don't care about her past driving record.
I care about who was speeding at that time.
For chrissake, I hope people aren't going to start behaving like married couples who say, "waaaaaaaaaaaaah you hurt me in 1984."
Then hold it against them for decades!

But if you ever want to hold a job or whatever, you can't curse people out at will.
You and I live in different worlds.

I don't think he meant to, we'll just wave him on this time.

Silly. You haven't been here since 1984.

Maybe you'd find we lived in closer worlds if you picked better examples.
Or do you really think that is an appropriate example?

If you choose to view an incident as a solitary incident rather than as part of an accumulating scree of behavior, then maybe I understand then where you come from. I just think it's not the best way -- not the most beneficial -- for both the forum and the person in question.

I mean, banning's a big deal; someone is gone, for either good or for potentially long periods of time. It makes more sense to me to incorporate a big picture approach that is informed by specific incidents. You seem to advocate a very straightforward, individual incident, accumulation of points against.... sort of like the "Three Strikes" rule... something that could literally be programmed into a computer. In that case, the Big Picture is considered not to matter.

PS. Before this is turned into a "binary comparison," note I advocate examining the incident itself in conjunction with the Big Picture. Both play a part in determining what happens.

My brother is a speed demon who even runs stoplights at times.

Brother: That dishonest fucker was hiding!
Jag: Did you run the light or not?
Brother: That dishonest fucker is a weasel.
Jag: Did you run the damn light or not?
    Brother: That's not the point!
Jag: You're guilty as charged, dickhead.
