I like the HK 417 too (as well as the M4 Carbine). Both are of my keen interest on the grounds of warfare. However, my experiences with them (until lately) had been severely limited to the sheer amount of practise you need with these weapons - if at the cost of using them for either self-defense, or in warfare. You might become a good marksman with them, but there is the likelihood of death if having to use them at closequarters/medium range combat. Personally, that is why I've now considered the MG42 (just at the thought of becoming a real combatant - not as if I will do). It can inflict damage en masse, and preserve a good line of defense at the same time. The rules of modern warfare are constantly changing, and they're far from being fair. The best choice, in my opinion, per se, for survival.
WELP, guys, it's time to move on. When your intuition is screaming at you that something is wrong, I think it's best to just not question and go with it.
I finally packed up four years of mementos into one tiny shoe box and the rest went into a hefty bag and into the dumpster at the gas station down the street.
