    A semi-colon serves to punctuate two related bodies of thought without using a period.

    Give an example:

    "Yesterday, we thought grandma died; but we later found that she only had another doodoo blackout."

    I hope my example doesn't violate the zero-tolerance policy.

    I don't think you need the "but," though?

    Mmm... It's not grammatically incorrect to use a transitional phrase like that. You're correct in that a transitional phrase isn't needed.
