Time machines are a product of the industrial age (which I find highly interesting, technology replaces magic) and started appearing in literature shortly before Wells popapularized the concept.
I actually came across some information about that, too. I came across a mention of a Chinese story dating back to the 3rd century AD.... so the concept has been around a while.
Now I wonder, before people starting writing about time machines, what storytelling device, if any, people used for stories about traveling into the past, assuming such stories existed.

A lot of stuff that was considered to be magic was in fact a proto-science. Astrology inspired astronomy, alchemy inspired chemistry, etc.

If Harambe were the last gorilla on the planet, I don't think I'd have him shot --- sorry kid, but this is the last freakin gorilla and there are millions of little human kids.
If bees did go extinct, we could always hire people to dress up as bees and pollinate flowers with tiny feather dusters. Sure it'd be more expensive, but there are also millions of idle teens.

It's interesting to ponder the worth of an object or individual under different circumstances. Society places more value on a kid's life so the gorilla was shot, but suppose Seth Rogen broke into the enclosure knowing full well it was dangerous. If I were in charge, I wouldn't have shot the gorilla and I don't think there'd be much of a controversy.

This scenario was posed in an old tv episode: If a building was burning and you could save either your cat/dog or a priceless Van Gogh painting, which do you save?
