What is one to do when politics is regarded as one of the most important things to stay versed and engaged in, but also causes you the most stress that doesn't largely connect to your life?

As unnoble as it sounds. I simply don't try to get too involved with it unless I can somehow make a direct impact.

It doesn't say that, but it is a bit confusing. Panama was created for the Canal. It became the tax haven in the Cold War for the reasons stated in the video.....

My therapist told me to basically ignore all political news until the election is over. Granted, I havn't been especially good at doing that. It's hard when your family kind of likes obsessing about it, even if I mostly agree with them. I'm trying to get more connnected to people, includong family, but in an election year, that can mean politics can and will crop up.

Mine has told me similar, but that ignoring them outright will be impossible, and actually counter-productive for me. In essence I am ignoring anyone who isn't within my realm of political beliefs and I ask myself "can I change their views, and am I open to being swayed by them?" if the answer is no, I ignore them, and if they persist, I shut their noise holes. The people element I can manage. I don't like it because it feels like I am ignoring problems, but it gets the job done. The stress comes from just seeing what happens in politics, so it's unavoidable.

^That I believe, but she did say "Panama was created as a tax haven."

I also don't think the US government said "We know this money is from criminals. Let's not tax it."

    She was not clear, obviously.

The US had a severe balance of payments issue during the Cold War. This is especially dangerous when on the gold standard. The US didn't export or import much in the 50 and 60s. Trade was such a minor part of the economy prior to the 70s. We sold a lot of military hardware and gave a lot of foreign aid, so balancing it out was a problem.

Letting oil companies avoid taxation by using Panama worked. It also worked to get liquid assets of all types.

We could easily put in place a new tax regime to deal with all this, but they don't want to do it. Do you really believe Panama could do this on its own? It has been a virtual colony since Teddy split it off from Colombia. We outsed Noriega not that long ago.

The rich and powerful around the world avoid taxes. The rest of us are screwed. Pure and simple.
