I find it amusing that people don't care about the powerball jackpot at the piddling amount of $100 million but they're interested when it's $800 million; $100 million (really just $40 million after taxes) just doesn't get you very much these days.
I've had the same thought every time the media starts talking about the Powerball. People act like their odds of winning are greater when the jackpot is higher too. Every time this happens, lists of things more likely to happen to you than winning the lottery start cropping up. Of course, getting struck by lightning is always near the top. Apparently, you're also more likely to die by drowning AND to get struck by lightning while you're drowning than you are to win the lottery.
Still...everyone has this irrational belief they're going to win.
