We used to grow over 15,000 varieties of apples in the US. Now there are only 500 and only 9 of them are widely available; not only that, but the nutritional content of cultivated apples is only 1% to 20% that of wild apples; so it is with other cultivated crops. Today, if you eat the wrong type apple, you can actually increase your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. There is good news on the horizon. New Zealand's come up with a nutrient rich apple called Monty's Surprise; look for it in US stores in a couple of years.
