The premise of Star Wars was to revolutionize the fantasy film, not to make an interesting sci-fi or action movie.
George Lucas' franchise was a legendary success, but the surge of merchandizing in the years following subverted continuation of his vision and the sci-fi/fantasy entertainment industry became more or less a toy/action porn shop.
Subsequent attempts to replicate Lucas' vision have generally failed. Lord of the Rings is a movie remake of a traditional fantasy saga, but nothing we'd consider revolutionary today. Krull had some potential, but it indulged on too many tropes and too little good writing.
John Carter had the right idea, but too much action. Also timed wrong, tho it was a success in Russia.
I'm going to make a space-fantasy book saga. I think.
