I thought alka-seltzer was supposed to be for indigestion? Now that I write it, that's such an antique brand name. It's so 50's.

A friend's reaction when he heard I'm going to travel to India (alone on the first day, then with a group): "Well, I already thought your going to Mexico and Morocco on your own was a bit risky. But India ... what's next? Damascus? Kabul? South Sudan?"

I wish I could say he is scandalously exaggerating but these days the media are painting Delhi as a woman's hell on earth and I'm trying hard to ignore that and assume everything will be nice and easy and everyone will be superfriendly and respectful.

Being optimistic is okay, but I wouldn't throw caution to the wind...

Hell no. I'll travel by metro (preferably women's compartment), stay on mainstreets and return to the hotel before dawn. As self preservation first I think I have a decent instinct when it comes to recognizing threats. Not to blame the victim here, that would be ridiculous, but the last too cases of raped foreign tourists where an 18 year old girl sleeping in a train compartment she shared with a strange man and a 51 year old woman asking a group of men for the way and then following them into a shady sidealley.

What lifts my spirits is the anecdote of a young woman who followed a sikh man into the forest (park) in Delhi after asking him for the way and suddenly noticed they were all alone and got nervous. He noticed her nervousness and pulled his kirpan (dagger). She got even more scared and then he said, pointing at his dagger: "don't worry, you're safe - I'll protect you!"

I have a legit question, for those of you who have ever been/are in love with someone: what does it feel like?

From my own subjective standpoint, love feels like a longing, as if there was only one true thing you wanted and that the object of desire was perfect, flawless, and utterly beautiful. It manifests itself as a nagging feeling, I want to be with this person, I want to exist with this person, I want to be there for this person. Remember that my emotion of love is much more akin to lust, however, and that the desire is actually a growing hole that needs filling, and when it isn't filled it grows darker and deeper, soaking in a melodramatic anger.
