    The little situational corners of the world I end up in never ceases to amuse me, and alarm me, which also amuses me.

    Passed out completely today for a brief moment for the first time in my life.

    It's interesting isn't it? Did you wake up confused?

    It was only very, very briefly. I donated some blood, everything went fine and then AFTER the donation and BEFORE getting up I started noticing a slight dizzyness. The Red Cross people each took one of my arms and wanted to guide me to a bed (normal procedure after a blood donation, you usually rest there for 10 minutes - only it's usually only one person accompanying you and I am small and lightweight, so that wasn't an issue). After a few steps I tell them "It's getting worse", I hear them say "Lay her down right here on the floor!". Then everything went black, I feel like I am cozily sleeping and then there are faces all over me, four people, a paramedic is gently slapping me in the face and going "Hello? Hello?". I was told afterwards that I was only out for a second or so and had reopened my eyes as soon as I my head was down and the bloodflow to the brain was reestablished .... but I had definitely passed out completely. A doctor was suddenly there told me that everything was okay, I was not to worry (strange that he would say that because it wouldn't have occured to me that this was serious) and that I had just had a vasovagal syncope. That's what happens when the vagus nerve all of a sudden goes into hyperdrive and shuts down part of your nrvous system. There is not enough blood reaching the brain and you faint.

    I have had vasovagal episodes before (without knowing what they were called), usually after not eating enough and standing for a long time, once after watching the vet try to take blood from my poor panicking cat and only hitting his vene at the thirs attempt because of his fighting while I was holding him... but this was the first time in my life it lead to onconsciousness. A very interesting and slightly creepy experience.

    To actually answer your question: yes, it felt like I had been sleeping at home in my bed and it took me a second to sort out where I was and who all these stranger were that were taking care of me. Only a second or two though but definitely yes.

    And my pride hurts. I like to think of myself as a tough gal and fainting might be ladylike and all but it's not exactly a sign of strength. I feel a bit like queen Elizabeth I : the body of a feeble woman and all that!

    Dear rich kid at university:

    If I say that there are too few poor kids at this university, I am NOT trying to deprive you of your studenthood here. I am not saying you do not deserve to be here.

    Because it is not about you, rich kid.

    IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

    Put on your big girl panties and deal with it.

    Lovingly yours,

    @Red Herring

    That's intense! Good to have some closure, at least. To know what it's called.

    Better than the one time I passed out. I fell onto the arm of a couch and almost broke my nose!

    I found this funny. I don't know why; I think it was the last part.

    Well I did intend for it to be funny.

    (Better to laugh than to slap the dude. Which I wanted to do. )
