Ah, you stupid fool, you stupid, stupid fool . . . If only I could hate you, if only I could crush that warmth that fluttered for an instant in my bosom, crush it beneath my heel and leave nothing but a crimson smear to remember it by . . . I want to punish you. I want to teach you a lesson that will stay with you forever. I want to cast you out from the places of grace and warmth, and render you cold, abandoned, and loveless. Let me see you lie face-down in the dirt; let me see you clad in tattered clothing, your stomach singing a symphony of starvation; let me watch you sob in the streets, your heart crushed with regret that you waited waited waited, waited until now to want for the succor I would have, could have given you.
"Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul." - Edward Abbey
"In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled." Daniel 10:2-3
But . . . but you were supposed to object. We were going to have a fight over it all, and after days of brutal strife, we were going to meet in battle, each of us armed with a sword. At the end of this battle, we were going to top everything off by plunging our weapons into each others' hearts and dying together at the same instant. It would have been poetical, with each of us victorious and defeated alike, and both of us joined once more in death.
