Despite the fact that I don't believe in afterlife, I think that's the kind of mindset promotes tolerancy, rather than a theists vs atheists division on which each side blame the other for everything bad that exists in the world.
Alright, I suppose the athiest authority is going to reciprocate this goodwill? Wait....

It's hard to call anyone a "real" Christian when it's basically impossible to live according to the Bible without committing a serie of crimes (see this).
Ha! The fact you'd post that shows how little you understand Christianity, or at least the life and ministry of Jesus, although dont feel bad, you've just in the same camp as the rest of humanity, believers and non-believers alike

Getting into heaven is like a draw by numbers coloring book.

Just follow the clearly demarcated rules and it'll turn out beautiful.

    (Doesn't that sound soothing?)
Don't know how much it'll bend til it breaks.

Well, it's not like we have an authority.

Ah, that's the folkloric Lark I know.

You'd make a good Enneagram 1 poster child.

A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbors think?'
A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God... '

    But of course.

I dont know what that means, anyway, the life and ministry of Jesus was a return to the teachings and practice of the prophets and a particular interpretation of the earliest interactions between humankind and God in the old testament (whether you believe they are mythological stories or not) which periodically rise and fall.

The old testament records these things but falls into legalism and strictures, Jesus (along with the prophets) recalls another living faith which is based upon living and acting and being a particular sort of person rather than strict adherence to legalism. That's the idea in brief, all to brief, summation, probably, but I figure if you're interested there's plenty of sources to check out.

Happened upon this during a news trawl and am currently hating my gender.

    There's just so

    fucking

    much

    of it

ETA: and now I'm wondering if my revulsion is in itself a weird form of sexism. Do I feel particularly badly for these girls because they're girls? Is that kinda sexist?

It doesnt sound soothing to me, it doesnt even sound likely, it sounds like "pie in the sky" to me and I dont like it.

As time has gone on I've liked the earn your salvation idea less and less and the salvation is a one time free gift idea provided you're part of the correct groupthink less and less still, these things all seem to be inventions of mankind, a lot of the time means of escape, temporary and unsatisfactory ones, from freedom and existential dilemmas, in particular the finality of death.

While I dont have much trouble believing in God, a living God which has interacted with humankind in recorded history and do so again, I've begun to think that an eternal afterlife, salvation if you want to call it that, does not necessarily follow, personal survival does not necessarily follow. I really do believe that there's a real possibilty that God intended and intends this life to be "all and enough", this is the gift, it is heaven and it is hell, depending upon what we make it.

There's a possibility, there always is, of a "heaven" of some permanence existings, I believe, and that will be the "end of history", not the triumph of capitalism (Fukuyama) or communism (Marx) but of something which surpasses all those categories. Although I'm not sure how well the world is doing in reaching that point, its been the history of class and ideological struggles and that looks set to continue. So long as there's life there's hope though.

Ah yes, is being a male and finding sexism objectionable just male chauvinism? Or paternalism? A through going feminism IS going to brand those things sexist and punish them all the same. Its part of the reason I dont endorse feminism anymore, at least not uncritically.

Those reports are totally and utterly reprehensible, are they going to have any impact upon anyone other than those individuals who already are conscientious enough to find them unconscienable and wrong?

A lot of the arcane and ancient, and rejected for being so, spiritual and cultural ideas of the past declared nothing short of all out war upon behaviour and thinking of the kind which is manifest in those reports, and often more successfully than feminism, although they were all jettisoned by liberals and blind alley liberators of the relatively recent past.

I don't think so. Honestly, that blog should make EVERYONE feel some revulsion. I'm female and probably felt just about the same thing that you did.

The only way it would be sexist would be if you started feeling like you needed to save these poor, sweet damsels in distress from their male oppressors.
    and it's nice enough to
    make a man
    weep, but I don't
    weep, do
    you?

I've spent at least 15 mins fantasizing how I'd kick their asses if I'd been there. At one stage I caught myself twitching I was throwing fantasy punches so hard. Does that count?
