Is it because so many Germans would understand the phrase in English, that they don't bother translating?
Ha ha, that actually warrants a blog post or even a thread of its own. Short answer: they use a lot of English expressions because a)they are lazy b) most people staying up late at night to watch foreign elections will understand it and c) English is still considered more hip and cosmopolitan than German.

Just to give you a short example, at a recent trade fair in Frankfurt on visual communication (advertisement people are notoriously OTT with this) you could hear people say things like "Sie haben einen Value-Add in der gesamten Working-Chain des Kunden" or "Das Wichtigste an der Customer Experience ist der Customer" or "Ich wünsche Ihnen viele tolle Insights." or "Man bekommt auch die Ingredients gesagt, die man braucht". It's downright bizarre.

I just looked her up, because my first thought was "Wait, Maya Soetoro-Ng speaks German??", and then I realized that Obama has a half-sister on his dad's side. I thought his only half-siblings were Soetoro-Ng and the Kenyan guy who currently lives in a slum.

Did Auma Obama know him all that well? Could you tell from the interview? I had been under the impression that he'd been estranged from his father's side of the family until relatively recently.
She didn't meet him until they were in their early twenties, but apparently got along very well with each other. She studied German at my alma mater and then at the university of Bayreuth where she got her PhD. She's now working on social projects in Kenya but her German is excellent.

We had one list for the German show hosts and one for the original American soundbites. The first list included "country of great contrasts", "polarized nation" and "too close to call (in English!) the second list included "greatest nation on earth", "American dream" and "American values"

Let's just say it was a fun night.

How wrong to have been so negative, how wrong to have been so gloomy, how wrong to have run away from life, how wrong to have said no, again and again, instead of yes.

I have this vague feeling that by the end of every week I add about 5-10 more books to my reading list.

Please keep in mind that you will be expulsed if you actually read any of it!

I'm sure I'm going to be a lifelong member. I received 5 book recommendations today itself (and the day is still quite young....).
