"My comrades and my beloved, upon your way you shall meet men with hoofs; give them your wings. And men with horns; give them wreaths of laurel. And men with claws; give them petals for fingers. And men with forked tongues; give them honey words." --Kahlil Gibran, The Garden of The Prophet
Killing someone who represents the US is a HUGE is huge problem.
Killing a representative of the US, especially while they are working as an agent of the US, is one of the biggest international relations fuck ups possible.
This kind of goes double for ambassadors, because their whole job is to effectively and civilly establish lines of communication between two nations.
I always wonder about why the US receives this kind of lethal attention abroad, I mean its not as though other major contenders for absolute power internationally shouldnt provoke the same sort of feelings.
The Chinese are militantly atheistic and its an institute of their national and state ideology, if anything that's bound to be a bigger issue than the US permitting a video featuring the prophet muhammed to be screened, I mean how do you even stop that now in the age of the internet? Its ridiculous.
That is unless there was more to this than meets the eye, its been reported here that it could have been revenge by Gaddafi suppoters using the cover of outrage about this other issue to operate, in which case its spy game stuff.
A customer of mine came into my business today to say hello. She is this tiny 80 something ExTJ who is so Te, it eclipses the sun. She was asking me if I am planning on keeping this business or moving on to something else. I told her that I was thinking about getting a masters in psychology. Her response? "Oh, don't do that! You're just like me and you will hate listening to people being stupid. You are way more gifted in the business side of things."
What makes it so bad, the symbolic quality of killing someone who is supposed to represent the country? Or does the nobody-may-touch-us idea cover all Americans?
It extends pretty far, there was a child of a US serving officer who was taken to the US in a custody battle when a US judge accepted his argument that the child could not grow up a protestant in Derry, Northern Ireland, it got very little screen time, I'm pretty sure because they wanted to avoid diplomatic problems and also to avoid provoking protestants in Derry who would insist that it is possible to raise children protestant there, its the kind of message which could prompt real sectarianism and some violence against random RCs.
That's just one example which I know of because it corresponds to my region and part of the world but the treatment of US citizens is a little different. The UK doesnt even try to pull strings as much as that.
