I've seen some truly nutty anti-Obama stuff, most of my US friends never update on Facebook but I remember one of them posting that if Obamacare got passed it would be socialism, I didnt know the guy so well, friend of a friend of mine, so wouldnt have commented but I thought it was odd, although my friend said that the US was really polarised about that. Even having lived with the benefits of the NHS for a while he wasnt a fan of Obamacare. Couldnt figure it out.

I think I commented on an update about homosexuality on your profile once, sorry if that pissed you off, if it was you, I dont know who is updating with them half the time. I put someones posts on hidden altogether when they updated more on that topic than they did on themselves for a week. The crazy thing, to me, is that most of these people are straight, usually married or part of a couple, usually with children, some of them with no connection to homosexuals at all, no friends nor family members. Now that's just to me, I know not everyone sees it that way and that's fine. Also some of the logic is simple and simplistic in those updates which bugs me but I know that most of the time they arent meant to sway anyones opinions, just like showing support for a sports team.

Its the volume or getting your newsfeed clogged with it that's the rub really, there's not many of my friends list who post like that. Some of them rarely update at all and its easy to tell when they've got new phones or tablets because they're prescence increases for a while then falls back to normal.

It's the sentiment behind a free and open exchange of ideas. Your analogy fails because the consequences between the things you're trying to compare are completely different. For it to make sense, gay people need to want you dead. They just want you to leave them alone. I cannot fathom how anyone can't see the logic behind the fact that a public declaration is fairly subject to criticism.

Well, I think there's also a difference between responding to public declaration by a stranger versus a friend or family member. It's a question of respect. My extended family post things all the time that I absolutely can't stand, but out of respect for them I refrain from commenting. This, to me, would be initiating hostility. I take the same view if I post something and someone makes disrespectful or derogatory comments in direct response to me-- this definitely makes me feel like they are being hostile towards me.
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

I dont believe that we are talking about the same thing. Its evidenced by Nicodemus' post above, the reality is that he believes it is good if individuals express themselves because they are then legitimate targets, targets for mockery and trolling, that is not about discussion or critical appraisal or anything like that.

Dont take my word for it though, just follow Nicodemus' posts for a while and you'll see, dont even take his posts in this thread alone, if you read them you'll see what I'm talking about.
