Addiction and a Prussian sense of mod duty makes me check into the forum on a regular basis even when I am away working and only on a cellphone.

That makes it even more disappointing and depressing to see over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again how yet another interesting thread idea is pulled down to the intellectual level of highschool restroom grafitti by people's inability to calmly and rationally discuss matters, by people taking things too personally and reacting emotionally, by people misinterpreting each other, by ad hominem attacks, by personal feuds and by a bunch of personal prejudices and logical fallacies.

This is why we can't have nice things

Yup. Valerian works better, but catnip works on humans differently than cats. [valerian also makes cats hyper vs sleepy].

Some of us already are, but then people will complain about that, too.

(I share your frustration at the behavior you have described.)
