I just think, who do you think you are going around all toothy and trying to bite surfers and chicks in bikinis, lets see you do that once I've sent you to the dentist and stuff.

I'm going to get like a big metal shark punching gauntlet made eventually.

Casual heartlessness, and I wonder how people can so easily become something so inhuman just because no one can see them.

I'm old fashioned I guess. I think the most important thing is how one behaves when they think no one is looking. Just because no one calls you out, doesn't mean you're not a piece of human shit for the things you consciously choose to do.
I only heard that quote recently, like within the last two or three years but I like it, I remember the internet when it was bulletin boards back before google became the main search engine, before Amazon had any comment, review or discussion forums and back before facebook, I think it was a different place and in no small part because of the age of people who were using it.

What interests me is when the feedback loop begins to take effect, people presently could be behaving very out of character online but eventually, as online and in person behaviour draw closer and closer into line with one another, they'll be like that whatever the circumstances.

I remember the internet way back when too, Lark, I think I know exactly where you're coming from. I have a few friends that I wound up meeting in real life after we met back on the old, old, old version of Yahoo chat back 1997, and we're still friends to this day. We've talked about how different it was back then. I mean, fair enough, when anything is brand new it's going to be one thing and then over time, things usually do get watered down, changed, and they evolve. Nature of the beast style. Still, I think it does matter what evolution it takes. We've talked about what a positive and fun experience chat, message boards, and emailing used to be, and how ugly and negative it has turned (with or without porn bots and spammers).

An old friend of my family started using Facebook about a year and a half ago, and what you wrote about the 'feedback loop' really stuck out to me because I've seen this kind of effect on her. Before she started using it, she was an opinionated person and she'd get irritable about some stuff, but it's nothing in comparison to the metamorphosis she has undergone since she started using Facebook and the internet. I think it's just about once every time I speak to her she says "People don't give a shit about anything but themselves! They're all selfish jerks!". I used to tell her that the world of the internet isn't the same as the real world, and I've wanted to believe the internet just serves as a dumping ground for everyone's frustrations. Thing is, lately I watch people and see the internet and cell phone usage DOES seem to have this ability to infect the perspective of the real world. I can't count on my fingers and toes how many times I've heard "People don't give a shit about anything but themselves!" recently, and I've friggin' said it myself at times. This atmosphere on the net DOES seem to cross over into the real world and how people treat each other, and it's just fucking blood curdling to me sometimes. Someone hears someone in the real world trying to vent about their problems, and it's like they're defensive because they think "Puh, why should I listen to this? THEY wouldn't give a shit about ME" or other such things, based on internet interaction. It's just creepy shit.

I think you got a very good point that its not just about the pornography and spammers, the net IS having a profound effect upon norms and values.

I'm not entirely negative about it yet because I know the same debates have been had about mass publishing, radio and TV broadcasting even before now, I also know there's the tendency for people to attack popular mediums imagining that its going to be really bad for a theorised "them" or "other" when its as likely to effect them or if it doesnt their theorising requires a reality check.

Using the internet hasnt made me vicious or depressive but I'm willing to admit perhaps it would if I were not influenced by other things too, I've got family, friends and books to read (some of which are heavy duty humanistic and hopeful material).

There was someone a while back who talked about how the Internet was like the world's Id or toxic dump or psychic shadow and they were just waiting for the time when the situation became reversed, sort of like when you take a sponge, dunk it in water, then ring it out. Its already happening, people are either being unconsciously influenced or taking their online personas offline and letting them walk around.

A good example of it is the idea of trolls or trolling, back in the day when I started using the net it was an awful thing to be called a troll, no one wanted to be a troll, it wasnt anything anyone could possibly aspire to being called and now there's people who attempt to fit that idea as well as they possibly can and others who upcast them as failures when they cant pull it off. Big change.

I wonder if these people realize....just because you move up the line does not mean people are leaving it. All they are doing is packing us in tighter!
