    Default A philosophical rumination

Why, even though they are one of the most irritating things about having a physical being, are hiccups the only bodily function lacking a derogatory English term?

What is the scientific term for hiccups? Hiccup doesn't sound very scientific to me. The scientific term is probably harder to say.

I always say that the PC term is whichever is the hardest to say -- and they're usually Latin-based. The rare exception is the PC term for "juvenile delinquent," which is the Germanic-based "children at risk," which actually is slightly harder to say, despite having fewer syllables.
