    Default Money = happiness?

    "Money doesn't bring happiness."

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what poor people say to feel better about their situation.

You know damn well that money is the ultimate happiness.

Yeah...that's why all the rich people in the world are so happy.

The actual truth of the matter was captured for me by an old lady here in North Carolina: "Money cain't buy you happiness, but it sure keeps a whole pile o' trouble off your front porch."

Money helps, but definitely is not the source of happiness nor is it synonymous.

It has been shown that money contributes to reducing unhappiness, but contributes little to increasing happiness in a stable way.

For example, not being able to afford food will make you unhappy. But being able to afford food doesn't make you much happier than "neutral" in the long term.

In sum, money is necessary but not sufficient to being happy.

For many people, money=happiness as long as it does not entail too much responsibility and pressure to build/sustain the wealth.

    It really depends.

If they are hedonistic and it enables them to have access to all sorts of pleasures, then yes, the responsibility can be worth it. Also, they thrive in high risk situations.

Other ones would be those whose positive self-image includes impressing others with wealth. They, as well as the power-thirsty, will definitely go through the pressure to reap the material benefits.

Those who want simplicity in life, will aim for subsistence rather than prosperity if prosperity means hard work.

    Money is freedom.
There are many aspects of life that can bring deeper happiness then money alone.
Yet without money one does not have the freedom to fully encounter the parts of life that bring happiness.

Freedom = greater self determination / choice

    The big questions :
"Do we know what makes us happy?"
"Do we need money to get that?"

Can Money Buy Happiness? - August 1, 2006

06.16.2003 - Can money buy happiness? UC Berkeley researchers find surprising answers

raises a good point I have experienced first hand. A payrise in a job I loved actually made me unhappier because it came at a price of "more to do" and a loss of work/life balance.

Having ridden 2 economic booms up and down (the last one being the dot-com boom from inside the industry) and watching my income/assets tag along...

I can say that if you have to work hard for your money, and you don't like what you do, you won't be happy. Some of the most fundamentally unhappy folks were those earning 1/4 of a million dollars a year or more. Time poor they purchased "stuff". Money can become like a drug. You need more and more to get a "high".

Now I am a "dropout" earning 20% of what I used to and doing much more of what I want to do. I couldn't go back into the rat-race just for money. Sometimes half the fun working towards something I want (saving, planning etc) rather than just being able to "go get it".

That being said, it is hellish to be a member of what are now called the working poor - who don't earn enough to do more than scrape by having to choose between food and something else.

I agree lol I point that out all the time. Being poor I know that money would solve ALL of my problems.
