    like/hate relationship

98% of the time, I hate them. As I'd stated in another thread, I'm nervously sensitive so I view TVs as electromagnetic disruptors (plus advertisements drive me crazy). The other 2% of the time, I like having some background noise if I'm home alone, or when something is on that I actually LIKE (Burn Notice, In Plain Sight, Eastenders, NOVA, Futurama). Otherwise, it would stay turned off.

Only watch it when I want to watch something. I can't stand people leaving unwatched televisions on in rooms. I also cannot tolerate when a TV is much louder then it needs to be.

Even worse than people leaving the TV on is them leaving the radio/music on. I hate OPM (Other People's Music).

I never understood why some people need constant outside stimulation in the form of TV, music, talking loudly, etc. To say it drives me crazy is an understatement.

When I'm home, I usually have the TV on for background noise, but I don't usually *watch* it - I'm primarily doing something else (usually oh-so-productive stuff like web browsing or novel-reading). There are a few shows I'll make an effort to watch (usually by recording them and watching them sans-advertisements later), like the Amazing Race, Mythbusters, or Deadliest Catch, but usually it's Discovery Channel in the background.

I think it's probably a lot different for people who live by themselves - if I'm home and *don't* have the TV on, the house is *silent* - and the little stuff like the little "beep-bop" noise my laptop makes occasionally, cars driving by on the road behind the house, or the pipes making noise, etc. drives me nuts.

I chose other. It might fit into another category, but here's my input.

I don't watch tv during the day. Unless it's a movie at a friends house or a movie in the theaters. I get anxious from just sitting there when I could be actually doing something.

And I prefer movies. But some tv is alright. I usually only watch it before I get into bed. So that's from like 9-10 and then I go to bed.

I can't watch tv during the active day. Sometimes when I sit down for a casual meal or snack, I will, but other than that it's not on too much. There are more productive and fun things to be doing.
Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way?

When I lived alone the TV would be off for days at a time. I almost never have it on when I am here alone.

    Other.

Most programming is worthless, but not all of it.

I recently saw a good program on NOVA called "The Musical Mind."

Television production is mostly driven by greed, and so producers don't care whether the content of their shows is good, but only if it'll glue eyeballs to the screen. And if greed isn't the motivating factor behind production, then it's self-promotion or some equally vain end. The end of television production is almost never to help make those who watch better people; instead it panders to our crassest, basest values, and the lowest common denominator.

    Blech!

My tv is on almost constantly, although I couldn't tell you the last time I actually watched it. I usually watch a tv show on my laptop to fall asleep to (and yes, the tv will be on in the living room as I am watching a show in my bedroom).

It would be almost impossible for me to fall asleep reading or to music though. I will always pay attention to the music or book and can't let my brain drift the way it does with television. Go figure.
