This thread made me wonder if I should hide my age, lol.
I don't really care, so why not show it?
My theory is that people judge you no matter what you do or not do... worrying about age seems counterproductive.

So just as we leave our bodies in our bedrooms when we commune in the noosphere, so we leave our race, our gender and our age behind as well.

For me it is more a matter of hiding my birth date than my age. I don't like "surprises" or drama associated with my birthday. Also, birth dates are almost as good an identifier as social security numbers.

    As for age ... I'm 47.

I share my age because I think context is useful when we're engaged in discussion. I do so knowing the risk of prejudice, but that happens at every stage of the gradual self reveal...

I think people don't share their age for a lot of reasons. Embarrassment, a desire to snag someone outside their age bracket, social experimentation, to flout social norms with impunity, as a personal buffer to private advances, role-playing unimpeded, fear of disclosure, etc.

A possible reason is shame or fear.

I really really don't see the big deal about showing birth date or age... I'm 18 almost 19 (going to be 19 next month).

If you're 15 people hate you elsewhere. Fortunately not here.
